GPA: 3.61 from top 50 engineering school USA (Tier 2/3) Graduated cum lade
Major: Electrical Engineering
Minor: Business Administration
Work Experience: 3 years at Matriculation
(India) 1 Year: Business Development officer for an online portal (gracerequest.com) for spa and salon reservations, and gym memberships. The business didn’t go well so we closed it after one year. I was working with the founder and 3 others.
(India) 2 years: Big 4 IT Risk, Associate Consultant
Internships:
• Comcast : Software QA 6 mths (USA)
• Central Electronics Limited (Govt of India) : Solar photovoltaic QA 6 mths
Community Service: Taught poor children in a village every weekend for 6 months
Leadership
• Elected officer for two professional organizations college chapter
• Represented the university at a leadership conference
Honors:
• Member electrical engineering honors society
• Ranked 3rd in Senior Design Competition
• Dean’s List
• Dean’s Merit Scholarship
Future Plans:
Use my mba education and international exposure to improve my business acumen and come back to India, an emerging economy, and start my own business.

You really do have an impressive profile. Good grades, GPA, work experience, etc..
I think that you have a competitive profile at your target schools. You have obviously worked very hard to get to this and I hope it pays off with MBA acceptances.
There are two things that I think you could work at that may help your chances.
1. Try to get some leadership experience at work. I know that it isn't an easy thing to do but really try to seek it out if at all possible.
2. Keep up with the community service if you have time. Again look to organize projects or manage people if at all possible.

Any advice on who to ask for my recommendations from.
I have short listed 4 people
A Senior Consultant at the Big 4 who is also my counselor and good frd
The founder of the startup I worked for. Again a good frd
Two Prof from College who I talked to before I left for recommendations in the future.
Additionally, the application process is very painful and I am not sure how to portray myself as a candidate. I don't know if the feeling is mutual among other candidates as well.
Any advice on who to ask for my recommendations from.

Hi Aju,
You've a strong profile in terms of GMAT, grades and work experience (startup + consulting).
However, some of your target schools may favor candidates with more work experience, for example the average work experience at INSEAD/LBS/Wharton is around 5-6 years. In your essays, you'll need to show that you achieved rapid progression at work and/or demonstrated maturity with above-average responsibilities. Additionally, you'd need to demonstrate your leadership abilities and potential, possibly drawing from your experience outside work.
