Hello !
I'm here to ask for some help. First, I want to mention that I'm french and that my message may contain some english/grammar mistakes. I'm doing my best, though.
So here is my story :
I want to apply for a master program in finance at a university in France. My application is somewhat good, considering that most people applying are currently in their 3rd year of superior studies. Just like me. But I have had several good internships in the finance field, I have an experience abroad ( I'm currently studying in Romania ), I'm developing a financial software and I'm a rather good at the interview game. My only problem are my grades from my 2 first years of university. There are a little bit above the average and it won't be sufficient. However, the program's adcom highly recomands people to pass the GMAT. Basically, a good GMAT with a good quantitative score will probably do the trick. The GMAT average of the program is 650 and a guy got in with a 600 score. The quant is more important than verbal because the program focused a lot on numerical side of finance and my english level will be assessed with the TOEFL. Basically, I just want to reach the interview. Then, I think I'll be able to explain why I'm a good fit, even with poor grades during my first 2 years.
I'm taking the GMAT next month, on the 26th of March, and I've been preparing it since December, with a long break during christmas holydays.
Here are the results from my tests :
Name Date Q V Total
Gmat prep 04/12/2012 40 29 580
MGMAT 1 19/12/2012 39 32 590
MGMAT 2 28/01/2013 44 34 640
MGMAT 3 04/02/2013 44 38 680
MGMAT 4 15/02/2013 42 38 660
As you can see, I've managed to improve my verbal (thanks to
e-gmat course). I think I can get one or two more points since I haven't finished the CR course. Since I've started it, I have a better understanding of the key concepts involved in CR. So I think I have some potential left there. So first question, is there a huge gap between v38 and v39/40 ?
My problem is the quant. I'm quite good at quantitative stuff actually ! But GMAT uses the type of exercice I don't really like. I mean, I was one of the best in physics and maths back in high school. My best subjects at the university are maths, stats and IT. So I don't have any allergy to numbers. But, I realize that I've improved my score only by 2-4 points ! I've been through all
MGMAT books, taking notes and maintaining an
error log, and some of Bunuel's amazing collection. Last week, I went back over some questions I got wrong at the first attempt and I can see a lot of progress. It just doesn't seem to appear in my score... I don't really understand. I've been thinking of working with
GMAT club test but I think it's still too soon. I got a Q41 at a free test, on february 1st, though.
Also, I've heard about Sackmann's Math Sets but they seem advanced and they are quite expensive given that I've already spent a lot for the GMAT...
So my question is : What do you think of my situation ? What should I do to improve my overall score to 700 (I'm not aiming more, I just want the 7..) by improving the quant part ?
Thank you all for reading
