Rate(Cellphone) = 1/(14*60)
Rate ( Laptop) = 1/14

Combined Rate= 61/(14*60)

Rate * Time = Work

61/(14*60) * Time = 1

Time = 13.77

It takes Cassie fourteen minutes to load a certain video on her cellphone, and fourteen seconds to load that same video on her laptop. If Cassie could connect the two devices so that they operated in concert at their respective rates, how long would it take them to load the video, rounded to the nearest hundredth?

A. 7.17 seconds
B. 9.12 seconds
C. 11.44 seconds
D. 13.77 seconds
E. 14.00 seconds

this question logic is little awkward... it is like if A can read a song in 20 sec and B can read same song in 3min then how much time it will take to read the song by A and B.

Assuming total amount of work always helps in such problems. Total work should be multiple of each of the given time.

Time taken to load video on cellphone = 14 minutes = 14*60 seconds
Times taken to load video on computer= 14 seconds
Let total amount of work= 14*60 units
Rate of loading video on cell phone = Total work/ time taken= 14*60/14*60 = 1 unit/sec
Similarly rate for computer= 14*60/14 = 60 Units/ sec
Combined rate = 1+60 = 61 seconds
Combined time = Total work/ combined rate = (14*60)/ 61 = 13.77

You don't even have to do the division. If denominator was 60 then answer would be 14. Since it is slightly greater than 60 then look for an option which is slightly less than 14.

phone - 840 secs
laptop - 14 sec

so laptop 60 times more productive
if use both
840 = 60x + x
x= 840/61x = 13.77

Can you please explain how 14:00 is not the answer since the question is asking rounded to the nearest hundredth? Will 13.77 has to be rounded?

A. 7.17 seconds
B. 9.12 seconds
C. 11.44 seconds
D. 13.77 seconds
E. 14.00 seconds

Cellphone rate = 1/(14*60) job/second;
Laptop rate = 1/14 job/second;

Combined rate 1/(14*60) + 1/14 = 1/t --> t = ~13.77 seconds.

Answer: D.

5-second approach: since the laptop rate is 60 times (!) as high as the cellphone rate (so much higher) then the time needed for both of them working together to complete the task would be just a little less than the time needed for the laptop operating alone (slow cellphone won't help much). Only D fits.

Hope it's clear.

1/(14*60) + 1/14 = 1/t gives t = 13.7704918032..., so 13.77 is already rounded to the nearest hundredth.
