It has been argued that the exposed electrical coils inside the most popular brand of toaster pose a risk of electrocution. Many consumers are now concerned about this effect and experts are suggesting a ban on exposed electrical coils. The manufacturer claims that this worry is unfounded as the coils are not able to be directly touched from the outside of the machine and bread products do not conduct electricity. Therefore, there is no risk of electrocution when one uses this type of toaster.
Which of the following would most seriously undermine the manufacturer's claim?
A) Electrocution by small household appliances is often minor and does not lead to major injury in the majority of cases.
B) There are other types of toasters available that do not have exposed electrical coils.
C) It is impossible to create a toaster that provides the correct level of crunchiness to bread without using exposed electrical coils.
D) Many users use tools that do conduct electricity to retrieve bread products that have become stuck in the toaster.
E) Most users know to unplug the toaster when they are cleaning it.
Hi,
Nice Question.. Thank you BeckyRobinsonTPR for this question..!!!
Conclusion: There is no risk of electrocution when one uses this type of toaster.
Now, we have to weaken it. We have to show that the toaster does harm the user.
A) Electrocution by small household appliances is often minor and does not lead to major injury in the majority of cases. This strengthens as electrocution is minor and there are no major injuries.
B) There are other types of toasters available that do not have exposed electrical coils. Out of scope.. We have to weaken that this toaster has some -ve points.
C) It is impossible to create a toaster that provides the correct level of crunchiness to bread without using exposed electrical coils. This Strengthen.. If it is impossible to create a toaster, than nothing can be done to reduce the electocution impact.. So this strengthen that this toaster is good.
D) Many users use tools that do conduct electricity to retrieve bread products that have become stuck in the toaster. Electric Current flows through conductors and can cause harm to the user.. This WEAKEN the conclusion, stating that toaster can harm the users.
E) Most users know to unplug the toaster when they are cleaning it.If users know to unplug, that means they are following the safety measures and this statement does not weaken the conclusion.
Thanks,
Jai
