I infer you have a good preparation

Attack the question sistematically, aggressively, really really aggressive. Then stop, see if you have done some mistakes and be sure of your answer (wrong or right is not important) and move on.

Next question: the same.

Try top set a road map: whenevr a question pops up in front of you

- this question talks about average

- ok basically we have A=S/# and from this move on about possible implications of this area of contents.

- try to establish a pattern in the question (if exists) or shortcuts.........

Do not give up :)

Never until your last breath

2 weeks before the exam, you were getting 710-720 range (so, 690 that you got on the actual exam is almost in this range), but suddenly one week before the exam, your score seems to have just jumped!!

Can you advice what you did in just one week, for this phenomenal jump.

Let me tell you something -

The GMAT prep tests are honestly only accurate for the first time, MAYBE the second time around. You have taken them several times, at which point it is no longer accurate at all. In fact, I argue that it makes you "worse" - because you start to half-remember things, and start using a different part of your brain to answer questions.

Take Manhattan tests. There are 6 of them. Those are fairly accurate. Do not re-take tests you've already taken, it is misleading (and deep down, you know this).

I scored several 780/770s on my GMAT prep, but it was because I took the prep test several times. Manhattan gmat tests were then a real representation, where I started back at around 640 until I worked my way into a "real" 700.

By the way, 690 / 700 on the GMAT is great. I don't see why you would retake unless your GPA is low etc.

Best,

-C

Hi Everyone,

I've just completed my test today and scored a 690 (Q45, V40) IR 7. I'm extremely disappointed with the score because I've prepared as much as I could have for this attempt. I had initially given the test a couple of years back and scored a 700 (Q46, V40). This was with a month's study of problems in the OG and the GMAT Prep 1 & 2.

This time I've studied with a wider array of books, which included the the Manhattan GMAT series and expanded pack of GMAT questions and two extra GMAT Prep tests that were released in September. I've put in 12+ hours per day, consistently over the last month and made a diligent effort to maintain a error log and work on it.

I used a break up completed questions/time remaining to keep track of my time in both the sections of the practice tests. The following were the scores of the practice exams

Two weeks before the exam :
1. GMATPrep 1 - 710 (Q47, V40 )
2. GMATPrep 2 - 720 (Q49, V40 )
3. GMATPrep 3 - 710 (Q48, V40 ) (Extended pack)

One week before the exam :

4. GMATPrep 4 - 730 (Q49, V41 ) (Extended pack)
5. GMATPrep 1 - 770 (Q49, V47 ) (Reset)
6. GMATPrep 2 - 780 (Q49, V48 ) (Reset)
7. GMATPrep 3 - 770 (Q49, V46 ) (Extended pack - Reset )

Other than for no.6 and no.7 I skipped the AWA, but did do the IR section. I saw a few repeats in each section, but made sure I gave them the full allotted time. I was also confident of getting them right in the future, because I had revised the principles in which I went wrong the first time. Considering the above, I was at the least expecting a 720 +. Not sure what happened today, I started quant fine but just lost track of time. I suspect this happened because for the practice CAT's I kept a paper with the time/question breakdown in front of me, but today as I started the test I realized I did not have one available !

I ended up rushing through the last 13 questions with around 10 minutes left. I didn't find any question difficult conceptually so not sure where I went wrong. The first time I gave the GMAT, I felt as though I was going to land up with a 500. The test was mental torture. This time I wasn't sure what was happening. Felt like a light jog in a park. Verbal is the same story I lost track of time midway and the last 13-14 questions suddenly seemed to be crammed in 15 odd minutes. I missed a complete RC question in the process. Not sure what am I supposed to take away from today. Should I give the exam again? I assumed practicing 7 tests was enough to ensure I get my timing right ? Would be really grateful for any feedback that you guys may have. Is this something that happens often and if so how do I go back to scoring in the 750+ range again ? The fatigue of the last few weeks in hitting me now :S. Need to get back up and give it in a month.

Would really appreciate some help in figuring this out :(

Hello,

Sorry to hear about your GMAT but I see a silver lining! Cheer up!! It would have been hard to track down what went wrong if it was not for timing issues. But now that you know that timing was your problem you can work to improve on it. To get 4-5 questions that you have done before in GMAT prep would surely inflate your score. Even if you spend time on them and 'solve' them, they would not mentally tire you out as much as questions you were seeing for the first time would. So, I wouldn't read too much into those high scores.

I would recommend taking a break from it all till you feel fresh enough to come back to it. Work on your timing and take the test when you are actually ready for it. It would help you if you figured out your timing bottlenecks - for instance calculations, complex algerba or not memorizing stuff you should. A similar approach for analyzing your standing when it comes to verbal would help you too.

I only focused on correcting my Verbal score. I was averaging 10 questions wrong in the first week. I wanted to cut that to zero. Based on the error log I had, I revised the basics from Manhattan SC ( mostly conditionals and parallelism mistakes ) and cut down my CR select the assumption mistakes. That brought down verbal incorrect answers to 3 across each of the last 3 tests.

My quant score stayed the same.
