Hi All,
I'm new to the forum and have a burning question...
I recently took the GMAT and got a 690 with the following specs: 46 Quant (68th percentile), 39 Verbal (88th percentile), 8 on IR and 6.0 on AWA. I immediately re-registered to take the exam because I felt like I could do significantly better on Quant - from what I understand most top programs place a high emphasis on scoring 80th percentile or higher on this section.
Anyway, I studied for a month and took a Kaplan CAT exam this past weekend. I was pleased with my improvement in Quant - I improved to a 48 (80th percentile) and stayed roughly the same on Verbal with a 40 (89th percentile). I thought this would be enough to propel my score to the 700+ range, but instead it gave me a 680.
Can someone please help me explain how this is possible? On the diagnostic exam I didn't really write anything in the AWA in the interest of time, and I also rushed through the IR which left me with a score of 2 (for a formidable 12th percentile haha). Is my lackluster effort in those first sections the reason for getting a lower overall score despite improving in both Quant and Verbal?? I thought those were the only two sections that contributed to the final score out of 800.
If anybody can weigh in on this at all it would be greatly appreciated, as I am trying to decide whether or not to push back taking the test and study some more.

I had to read your post twise in order to find what is you test date for re-exam.
So It's really hard to comment on "push back taking the test and study some more" part.

Answer is NO

Yes, You are 100% right
The reason it still gave you 680 is that Scoring algorithm used by Kaplan is different from algorithm used in GMAT.
In fact no one except GMAC guys knows the exact scoring algorithm used in GMAT.

Focus less on the exact number -- which is a result of a complex algorithm that may or may not exactly replicate the algorithm from the actual exam. Instead, use these practice tests as opportunities to apply your psychological mentality towards a testing environment.
