Hi,
I gave the GMAT 2 days ago, and got 730 (Q48, V41, IR7). Like everybody else who gives the test, I was also dreaming of getting 750+, but I think this should suffice.
Firstly, thank you GMATclub! You guys were a blessing. I loved your practice tests, 198 GMAT questions, answer explanations, and all the other stuff. It was a great help.
Special mention to chineseburned's tips on AWA. I was nervous about this section, and his post helped keep it simple. In fact, I had downloaded the article to the Pocket app on my phone, and re-read it just before entering the exam center. Will update you on the AWA score. I think it went well.
The serious test preparation took around 1 month, though I had been dabbling with it for the past 3 months. This strategy: of becoming familiar with the content and style of questions several months before the exam, and getting down to hard practice a few weeks before the test, worked for me. It may work for other people who are in a touring job & can't devote a lot of time to studies for long periods.
I referred to OG '13 as my main book. The questions, as everybody knows, are high quality, but the explanations suck. Since my quant was really bad, and I didn't have the resources to buy the
MGMAT material, I relied mainly on the free GMATclub practice materials.
Another extremely helpful resource was NOVA's GMAT guide by Jeff Kolby. He explains the maths concepts topic wise, and they were helpful for a novice like me, though the questions are very basic and simple. Good for building your basics, but don't solely depend on it.
The verbal section explanations in the NOVA book were excellent, however, and were very helpful. I do not know how it stands with respect to the competition, but it was a great value for me. Moreover, it was quite cheap, at least the Indian version (less than Rs 300/ $5).
Some tips for would be test takers:
1. Practice, practice, and practice. Then practice some more. A lot of good material is available for free on the net, especially here. Use it.
2. Giving GMATprep after going through the OG once is a good idea. Giving the GMATprep test without getting familiar with the material first might be demotivating, and a waste of a good free test.
3. Many good candidates do badly because of lack of confidence. It's mainly due to weak concepts in marginal topics like probability, series, etc. Do not worry too much about them. There aren't many questions from these topics. Learn their basics, and you should be able to handle most of the questions.
4. Do leave time to review your essay in the end. You will have made mistakes in it. At east 2 mins should be kept aside for review.
5. IR section can be dangerous, if not paid due attention. I had not been able to complete this section during my GMATprep tests, and had run out of time. Luckily, I got the hint and spent some time brushing it up. the 50 online IR questions with the OG were good practice. Try to practice with the online sources more. The paper based one are just not the same.
6. Test taking strategies like substitution, elimination of answer choices, etc, do matter. Develop these skills.
I think any more advice from only a 730-er would sound like preaching now. I am a very mediocre student with a non-math background, and I think that sharing my experiences might help some people in situations like mine.
Hope it helps. Good luck, and cheers!
