Help me Guys!!

I am taking GMAT on 30th Oct, 2014. My GMAT Prep score was 600 which i gave in last week. My Target Score is 720.

I need guidance from u guys. I badly need a Mentor who can show my the right direction because from last 6 months i am just moving, without any guidance. Their is no one whom i know, who has taken GMAT or who knows about it.

My present Situation :

QUANT: I think, i am good in Quant. But my score was 42 in GMATPREP. I have done MGMAT Guides, but still lack confidence.
The biggest problem with me is i first want to learn everything and then want to give some test or solve questions. But that situation never comes when u know everything. I am running away from making mistakes.

VERBAL: Though i spent most of the time of my 6 month preparations on Verbal, still i think i stand nowhere.
RC: i haven't practiced much on RC. I have know strategy for solving it (though i have read many strategies, but i am not able to implement any of them)

CR: I am still going through POWERSCORE Bible, havent dont any question of OG yet.

SC: Read the Foundation of verbal- Manhattan and then the strategy guide. But after some time, i had forgotten everything (atleast i think so). So i have taken egmat course and now preparing through it.

Please tell me guys, how should i move on from now onward. I have 1 month left, and i know, if i make optimum utilization of this month, i can achieve my GMAT score. ALso kindly suggest, when should i start my test series.

P.S. I am Chartered Accountant (did it in 1st attempt) and achieved 95 percentile last year in CAT(indian gmat). This is my 1st attempt of GMAT.

I think you need to analyze your quant test(s) to see where you are going wrong. A 42 indicates that you are still getting some easy and medium level questions wrong. Are the mistakes due to lack of understanding? Are they silly mistakes? If the former, you will need to strengthen your basics in the problem topics.

For Verbal, the official guide should be your primary source of practice questions. If you haven't done questions from the OG, start now! Try to develop a feel for how the GMAT phrases its questions and answer options.

Take a mock test (or two) every week to see how you are improving. Thoroughly analyze each mock test and try not to repeat any mistakes.

Hi Sachinjain,

I would agree with your thought that a mentor would help you mold your prep strategy. The Economist GMAT Tutor offers a free online tutor session if you sign up, and I know that other products offer that as well. A tutor is very useful in terms of developing your studing plan and strategy.

I know you outlined a few challenges on your posts, but I'll focus on RC for now. I see that you're having trouble implementing strategies for these questions. Here's a simple takeaway when it comes to RC: it's important to know that the GMAT requires that we be active readers. Meaning, it's about HOW you read the passages. Our tutors recommend that you ask yourself the following questions when reading the passages:

What is the main idea of this passage?
What is the author's position and tone?
What is the structure of the argument?

You still have a month until you take the test. With that, start reading publications such as the NY Times, Businessweek, the Economist. Read the oped section, as they often use a language level similar with and are about the same length as the GMAT RC questions.

Here are some additional posts that we have on our site that discuss RC:

Hope this helps, and best of luck!

Hi. Yes. You do have a bout a double load. With GMAT it can be overwhelming but unfortunately quantity loses vs quality.
Hi bb ,
So in that case does GMAT club mathbook along with OG suffice for Quant's? ?

This message got away from me. Sorry prashd
The GMAT Club Math book is mostly advanced topics - to help with understanding some of the more complicated things. It does not cover EVERYTHING. so i would still suggest at least a Kaplan Math Workbook or the MGMAT books - they have and demonstrate some good and hard questions with simple concepts.

P.S. We have published the Math book as a free resource and I have no issue recommending it to folks but we did not intend for it to be a replacement of regular resources since it is missing basics and practice questions/exercises.
