I think it is a good idea to get familiar with the actual set up. A lot of students don't like writing on a plastic sheet with this ink pen. It is a bit slippery and if you are a left handed writer then it is a pain, because it doesn't dry very quickly. So it never hurts to have taken the CATs at home with the actual set up. It reduces the number of variables that can throw one off at the exam.

Pen and writing pad won't make a difference. It's just your knowledge,accuracy and skill.
It's good to mimic the conditions as you said.
