D.

As above answer. Also E does not work because "would" implies some kind of hypothetical situation, whereas "will" is more suitable for a prediction.

A is wrong because of 2 reasons:
1. but that - is wrong in this sentence.
2. the underlined portion doe not have any verb. As such, if you read out the whole sentence, it practically doesnt give any meaning and sounds weird.

D introduces a verb in sentences and gives meaning to sentence that scientists thought something.

Again a verb is required in the underlined part of the sentence. This is because the 1st half tells that scientists assessed view atomic power stations as unsecured at present but in the later part, "BUT" signifies they did something else also. For that you need to have a verb here. think does that perfectly in D.

I will go with E.

Scientists think...
it might be true, or might not be true!
Will is not needed, since it is an uncertain situation. They only think that it might be true.
Since we have hypothetical situations, would/could should be used.

on other hand, it makes sense to tell that scientists think that..then subordinate clause.

All answers are flawed. What is the source of this one?

Hi,

"think" is required since "view" cant be used for the clause where they claim that the plants can be made secure..its their opinion so "think" makes more sense. So its between D and E.

Now in E both would/ could show the possibility so they are redundant while in D "will be/could" shows that it will happen or there is a possibility.

So D.

I am confused between option D and option E.
what is "they" in option D referring to?
Is it referring to atomic power stations or scientists?
For this ambiguity I chose E but I believe correct formation should be "think that"

To answer your query, here "they" refers to "power stations"; pronoun ambiguity is not at play in this case, as "they" can logically refer to only one noun - it makes no sense to say that scientists could be made adequately secure in the future.

understood, so ideally MEANING IS THE KING
If there is only one logical reference then there is no point in banging our head thinking that there can be multiple nouns for this pronoun.
