Hi Pranay1706,

The amount of study time you're expecting to commit is in-line with what many Test Takers commit, so your plans are reasonable. You might end up needing to spend more or less time on particular subjects, but that degree of flexibility is something that all Test Takers have to deal with at some point.

Given your score goal, investing in a GMAT Course of some type (either Guided Self-Study or instructor-led) is probably a good idea. The books that you mentioned would also probably be okay for the purposes of familiarizing yourself with the general content. The major change in the GMAT happened in 2012: the addition of the IR section and the removal of the Issue Essay.

GMAT assassins aren't born, they're made,

Hi Pranay,

It really depends on the kind of coaching you're up for.
Most of them start with the basics. If you feel that you're really out of touch, out of personal experience, I'd suggest you brush up your basics. Get Quant-ready. But then again, if you're an engineer, from India, you shouldnt have any problems. xD

Focus on the verbal part, because honestly, that is something that determines your score towards the end.
I'm not an expert; I have just given my GMAT, after preparing for a month, and I do have a 700+ score. It is not that difficult.
Start off by deciding on a date. Even if you don't book a date, you might want to finalize it in your head, mark it on your calendar, whatever.

GMAT club is a great hub, but rather than wasting your time scouring through random questions, finish something that gets your basics right. The OG, for example.
Start with the diagnostic tests. To make it more realistic, try the online OG diagnostic tests. You can tell from these if you really need coaching.

For quant, attempt questions in sets of 40, with a timer. And gradually try reducing the time you take. Try to do each question in less than two minutes.
DS questions typically take more time. But then, it all depends on the level of questions.
So yes, finish the OG first. They're sub-700 questions- most of them anyway. But finishing the OG gives you the confidence you need.
If you have a doubt, GMATclub your way to the solution.

For verbal, you might need help, if your diagnostic score doesn't come out too good. Certain books are recommended. For example, most GMAT clubbers vouch for Manhattan SC Strategy guide for SC. The Powerscore Bible for Critical Reasoning is good. A little research on your part can go a long way in helping you achieve your goals.

All the best!

Hi All,

I know there are many experts and seasoned GMAT Assassins out here :) It will be of great help if I can get opinions and advise on my situation described below:

I have a work ex of about 6 years and now I want to pursue MBA for career advancement. I am aiming for a 700+ score but have following roadblocks.
-> I am terrible in Quants - used to hate maths :( and was an avg student.
-> Not used to studying since 6 yrs.

While I can figure out to tackle the second part and get into study mode, What I am interested to know from you guys is how should I go about preparing for the test. especially Quants, right from the Day 1?

Now I assume I might need to join some GMAT coaching class but does it make sense to join the class without knowing the basic concepts in Quants?
Simply consider this. I am like 0 in quants at this stage. So I would like to understand whether:
a) At first should I do some self study to brush up the concepts and then join classes to gain more productivity? or
b) straight away join classes? I assume they would have a definite timeline to complete the course so it will go on its own pace which may be a little too high to keep up with for a level 0 like me.

If your suggestion is with option a then please advise me the following:
1. What Math concepts/ topics are being tested in GMAT?
2. Any good books/ online courses / study materials/ online links that I can refer at that should help me in understanding & brushing up the concepts?

If there is any other option apart from what I have mentioned above please do come out with it.
If there is any particular strategy that I could adopt please advise.

I have not taken the GMAT Prep test which gives a fair idea of where we stand at the beginning of preparation for the same reason that I do not remember any Quant concepts and would have done miserably in the test. Dint want to waste it considering there is only limited attempts.

I do not have a definite date in mind to give the test but I want to start my preparation as soon as possible. First I want to prepare myself thoroughly and feel confident about the test only then I am going to apply for the date. I am determind to work hard and long if need be because I do not have brightest of brains but I have got the fire to work passionately and crack the exam. All I need is right guidance.

Hope to receive some quick replies from helpful people out here. Thanks

Regds,
Pranay

Hey Pranay

If you're looking for guidance, then use this customized 2-3 month study plan to help you: https://www.gmatpill.com/gmat-practice-t ... study-plan

Use this as a guideline. You don’t have to follow it exactly but the structure of the study plan should be the same structure that you take in your approach. This helps to optimize your retention and learning.

As you study, we recommend that you focus on one particular subsection for multiple consecutive days before moving onto the next. You can see this in our study plan where we recommend 5 days on nothing but SC -- before moving onto CR and then RC.

The quant section typically ranges from basic algebra to pre-calculus. We recommend examining multiple variations off of the same core question type so you are prepared when the same kind of question is asked in a slightly different way.

Here is a list of problems you can try out: https://www.gmatpill.com/gmat-practice-t ... -questions

If you get stuck, then you can use these video explanations to help guide you: https://www.gmatpill.com/gmat-practice-t ... stion/1053

Best of luck - and we are here to help.
