let t=time of Poncho's trip=225/60=3.75 hours
let w=C&C's waiting time at gas station
75(t-w)=60(t)
w=t/5=3.75/5=.75 hours=45 minutes
45 minutes+1 minute to avoid meeting in San Diego=46 minutes

Cheech and Chong were traveling back home to Los Angeles (L.A.) from a "business trip" in Mexico when they pulled into a gas station from where Poncho of California Highway Patrol was just leaving. They know California Highway Patrol drives 60 mph, while they tend to drive 75 mph. If they don't want cross Poncho again and San Diego is almost 225 miles away, where Poncho exits the highway for his station, what is the least amount of time, in minutes, Cheech and Chong should hang out at the gas station before continuing their journey to L.A.? (Note. L.A. is farther away from San Diego from Mexico.)

A. \(40\) minutes
B. \(42\) minutes
C. \(44\) minutes
D. \(46\) minutes
E. \(48\) minutes

Solution:

It takes Poncho 225/60 = 3.75 hours to drive from the gas station to San Diego, while it takes Cheech and Chong 225/75 = 3 hours to drive the same distance. Since 3.75 - 3 = 0.75 hr = 45 min and they don’t want to encounter Poncho during their trip, they should wait 1 additional minute, i.e., they should wait 46 minutes.

Answer: D
