Hi all,
Last year, the idea was put in my head to give GMAT by a friend who himself is studying abroad. I wanst very inclined myself to give, but still starting preparing anyways.
In my first attempt last year in oct, I wasn’t prepared enough, so I scored really low (630). I gave it again after one and a half month, but scored even lower than before, i.e. 620. Honestly it hit me so hard that I decided not to give it ever again.
I took my time to decide whether I should give it again or not, and then started preparing again this year in May. The very first I did, was find out what I was doing wrong. Like most of the candidates, I was also feeling lost. I was preparing for GMAT like we Indians prepare for CAT, which is totally wrong. GMAT is a very different exam than CAT, so it needs a different approach. Unlike CAT, you don’t need to practice a lot of questions, but the right questions and every time you get a question wrong, find out the concept it was testing you on and how to correct it.
So, the first thing to do is adopt the right preparation strategy. This is the way I started preparing:
1. Make a schedule and stick to it no matter what. Every person is different, so find out what time you feel most comfortable practicing, and then devote as much as time you can, but stay consistent. Even If you practice 10 to 20 questions per day, but you analyze your mistakes properly after practicing, that should be good.
2. Find out your weak areas. GMAT is an adaptive test. When it finds out what your weaknesses are, it grills you more on them and thus not let you score. You really can’t leave behind one topic just because you are not good at it. Plug in your weaknesses. Take help from people through forums, connections. This way you will be able to take help from people who went through the same problem, so they can help you in a better way.
3. Stick to official material as much as you can. I won’t say any unofficial material is useless. The books like Powerscore CR bible or Manhattan SCs are actually good, but they don’t work for everyone. I have given the exam 3 times by now, so I can say with surety that if you stick to the official material, you won’t get any surprises on the exam. The official material is more than sufficient. Apart from GMAT official materials, I have used Gmat Pill as well. It is also quite close to the official content.
4. In the beginning, try to get the answers correct rather than in time. Once you are able to achieve the desired accuracy, and then start timing yourself. Don’t rush.
5. Decide a timeline in which you want to give GMAT and decide your practice hours per day accordingly. This will keep you on track and motivated. Like I said in point 1, stay consistent, decide a certain task per day, no matter how small, but complete it in that very day.
For AWA, I followed the template shared by chineseburned on GMATCLUB. I haven’t got the AWA score yet. The rest of the breakup is 700(Q49, v35, IR7)
In the end, I would like to give an advice. See GMAT is just an exam; don’t make it more than that. Don’t stress too much over it that if you are not able to score. It is not a judgement of your intelligence or success rate in life. I have done this mistake and in a way paid heavily for it. I became so depressed after my first attempt, and that’s why even after preparation, I couldn’t score in the second attempt just because of the stress I was taking to perform. It’s just the first step. Applications can make a lot of difference. So Just Chill:)
I am an MBA degree holder and aspiring to go for PhD program in Management studies. Any inputs regarding that are most welcome.
On closing note, I wish all the aspirants preparing for GMAT all the very best. Do feel free to reach out to me if you need any help regarding GMAT.
Happy studying:)
