How do we know about the main subject ? Is it the first subject in the sentence ?
For example:- Cats along with dogs are sitting on the carpet.
In this sentence both subjects are plural. So are goes well with both.
Try not to think of it as the number of subjects. Instead, focus on what is part of the subject. Along with... and together with... never help us form a compound subject in standard English. Therefore, the word dogs is not part of the subject at all. The subject is made up of only one word: cats.

He, along with his friends, operates that stall. (there is only one noun in the subject, He)
He and his friends operate that stall. (the subject is the larger noun phrase He and his friends)

In the first one, to check the agreement, you can just drop the along with bit because it does not form part of the subject.

He, along with his friends, operates that stall.
