In traveling from a dormitory to a certain city, a student went 1/5 of the way by foot, 2/3 of the way by bus, and the remaining 8 kilometers by car. What is the distance, in kilometers, from the dormitory to the city?

(A) 30
(B) 45
(C) 60
(D) 90
(E) 120

1/5x +2/3x = 13/15

then
8 = 2/5
x = 1

x = 60

1/5th of the way = 3/15
2/3rds of the way = 10/15
13/15ths of the distance has been covered, therefore the remaining 2/15ths are equal to 8 km. Therefore our ratio is 8/x = 2/15, where x represents the total distance. To get from 2 to 8 in the numerator, the multiplier is 4, therefore to get from 15 to x in the denominator, the multiplier is also 4. 4x = 60.

x = 1/5x + 2/3x + 8

x - 13/15x = 8

2/15x = 8 => so x = (15/2)*8 = 60Km
