Hi Everyone,
I just wanted to share that I retook the GMAT today. My previous test was Sept. 17 and I scored a 620 when I was looking for a 625 so after some discussion on the board, I decided to retake and scored a 710. Previously I scored a 36Q 40V and 2 IR. This time around I scored 47Q 41V and 8 IR. So a pretty huge improvement. I mainly re-wrote because of the low IR and Quant scores, I think the IR I had a 12th percentile and improved to 92nd. 710 puts me at 91st percentile.
Before the exam I re-did the first GMATPrep exam and scored a 700 so I even exceeded that score when I'd already seen those questions before and basically expected a 650 today. Furthermore, there were a lot of quant problems I didn't even bother studying and didn't bother on the exam, so if I really wanted I could probably push the score higher but as I said, the avg of the school I'm looking at is 625. This score is making me think about applying to some of the top US schools since I'm close to Boston and New York but the tuition will be roughly 30x more.
Back to the test, keep in mind that I did 100% self studying and only used the 2015 Official Guide. In the 7 weeks in between, I only studied the Quant. All I did was redo all the questions in the book and review them and then I went and did it. The other thing that killed me on the last test was the timing; to the point that I possibly didn't finish on time. Using the online test mode for the Official Guide, they give a time for each question and a total timer, which makes it really easy to keep track, but the real exam only offers a countdown timer, which is not quite the same thing. I found I was getting stuck on hard questions and spending 4-5 minutes on them just to get them wrong (same reason for my horrible IR score). As I was studying, I developed a new system where I'd write down the time before starting each question and at 2 minutes, I'd decide if I could solve it and spend the extra time and also decide based on the remaining time I had. In test mode, I found even the easy questions were taking almost 2 minutes so I had to adjust my approach and just keep going forward without hesitation. In the previous exam, those questions that would take 30 seconds, I'd think that since it took 30s, I should check it. Basically I had no idea what I was doing the first time. Also I'd periodically stop and see if I was going at a good pace or building up extra time or at a deficit.
I used the same approach for the IR and this time remembered that there was a calculator.
Also, the AWA was much easier so it started off well and the last time I got hung up on a few IR questions and guessed on the last 8, this time I kept pace. I was also sure that my verbal score the last time was an anomaly and I would do slightly worse but I managed to improve on that without working in between. Also I was really fading partway though the verbal and didn't seem to care as much because I knew I improved a lot on the quant.
Anyways, I'm so glad this is over and I exceeded my goals. Hopefully this inspires some people who will be retaking soon. My application deadline is Jan. 15 so I have time to work on the essays. I'm just happy to be above the average so I can be a student that brings up the average rather than lowers it.
