The company spent 1/4 of its revenue on marketing. So 3/4 are left. Of those 3/4, 1/7 was spent on maintenance. Thus, 3/4*1/7= 3/28 were spent on maintenance of the total revenue.

We need a common denominator. So lets use 28. 1/4=7/28. - > 7/28+3/28= 10/28 were spent on marketing and maintenance of the total revenue.

Therefore, 18/28 of the total revenue are left. 18/28 reduces to 9/14, thus answer D.

Hi All,

This question can be solved by TESTing VALUES.

Given the two fractions that occur in the prompt, let's choose the common-denominator and give Company Z $28 in revenue (you might also notice that 4 of the 5 answer choices have a common-denominator of 28).

We're told that Company Z spent 1/4 of its revenues last year on marketing...

$28 - (1/4)($28) =
$28 - $7 =
$21

...and 1/7 of the REMAINDER on maintenance of its facilities.

$21 - (1/7)($21) =
$21 - $3 =
$18

We're asked for the fraction of last year’s original revenues that Company Z had left after its marketing and maintenance expenditures.

Money left = $18
Original Revenue = $28

18/28 = 9/14

Final Answer:
GMAT assassins aren't born, they're made,

Say we have $28 (because it works nicely with 1/4 and 1/7)

$28 (Revenue Total)
-$7 (Marketing Expenses)
----------------------
$21 (Remainder)
-$3 (Maintenance Expenses)
-----------------------
$18 (Left over)

18/28 reduces to 9/14

A. 5/14
B. 1/2
C. 17/28
D. 9/14
E. 9/11[/quote

Let last year revenue be "R"
Expenditure on marketing : 1/4th of R
Remaining value of revenue : 3/4th of R
Expenditure on maintenance : (1/7 x 3/4)th of R

Fraction of R after expenditure : (1 - (1/4 + (1/7 x 3/4))) = 1 - (5/14) = 9/14

I feel like this is easier than a lot of the ways I'm seeing but to each his own...

\(\frac{1}{4}\) spent on marketing, \(\frac{3}{4}\) remaining

Of the \(\frac{3}{4}\) remaining, \(\frac{1}{7}\) is spent of maintenance. \(\frac{6}{7}\) gets kept

The fraction left is \(\frac{3}{4}\) X \(\frac{6}{7}\) or \(\frac{18}{28}\) or \(\frac{9}{14}\)
