if the average (arithmetic mean) of a,b,c is 5, the average (arithmetic mean) of c,d,e is 8, and the average (arithmetic mean) of a,b,c,d,e is 7, what is the value of c ?
A. 2
B. 3
C. 4
D. 5
E. 6

We are given that the average of a,b,c is 5, the average of c,d,e is 8, and the average of a,b,c,d,e is 7.

Thus:

a + b + c = 15

c + d + e = 24

a + b + c + d + e = 35

Adding our first two equations together, we obtain:

a + b + 2c + d + e = 39

Subtracting a + b + c + d + e = 35 from a + b + 2c + d + e = 39, we obtain:

c = 4

Answer: C

a +b +c =3*5 =15
c +d +e =3*8 =24

adding both we get a +b +2c +d +e = 39
also a +b +c +d +e = 5*7 = 35

subtracting the equation we get c =4.

Option C

Average = \(\frac{Sum }{ Total }\) => Sum = Average * Total

Average (arithmetic mean) of a,b,c is 5 => a+b+c = 5*3 = 15 ------ Eqn.1
Average (arithmetic mean) of a,b,c is 5 => c+d+e = 8*3 = 24 ------ Eqn.2
Average (arithmetic mean) of a,b,c is 5 => a+b+c+d+e = 5*7 = 35 ------ Eqn.3

Eqn.3 - Eqn.1 gets us => a+b+c+d+e - (a+b+c) = 35-15
=> d + e = 20 --------- Eqn.4

Eqn.2 - Eqn.4 gets us => c+d+e - (d+e) = 24-20 = 4

Hence , c = 4
