+ 1 for E.

Stimulus :
The Farmsley Center has been a significant source of the economic revitalization of downtown Metropolis because, on average, anyone who attends a performance at the Farmsley Center spends 83$ at downtown businesses on the day of the performance.

(A) The Metropolis Chamber of Commerce honored the Farmsley chairman this year for his contributions to the city. --> Irrelevant
(B) Restaurants near the Farmsley Center tend to be more expensive than restaurants in outlying areas. --> Out of scope
(C) The Farmsley Center is the only building in Metropolis designed by a world-renowned contemporary architect. --> Irrelevant
(D) For major theater companies on national tours, the Farmsley Center is the first choice among venues in downtown Metropolis. --> Though this option looks enticing, there is a possibility that not much companies embark on tours, instead very few opt for tours, in that case it is no strengthener
(E) Many suburbanites visit downtown Metropolis on weekends in order to see performances at the Farmsley Center. --> Correct, if all these suburbanites visiting Farmsley Center spends $83 per person on performance day resulting in significant revenues for Farmsley Center and thus significant source of the economic revitalization of downtown Metropolis

Hence, E.

Hi! I had rejected option E because of 'weekend' mentioned. In terms of revenue ,4 major theater firms will bring the crowd as well and that should be a much more stronger reason supporting the argument.

Can someone explain why D is wrong? According to me, if major theater companies are visiting Downtown Metropolis with the purpose of visiting Farmsley Center then that will also be a source of economic revitalization.

The Farmsley Center for the Performing Arts, designed by a world-renowned architect, was built 10 years ago in downtown Metropolis. A recent study shows that, on average, a person who attends a performance at the Farmsley Center spends $83 at downtown businesses on the day of the performance. Citing this report, the chairman of the Farmsley Center’s Board of Trustees claims that the Farmsley Center has been a significant source of the economic revitalization of downtown Metropolis.

Which of the following, if true, most strongly supports the chairman’s contention?

(A) The Metropolis Chamber of Commerce honored the Farmsley chairman this year for his contributions to the city.
(B) Restaurants near the Farmsley Center tend to be more expensive than restaurants in outlying areas.
(C) The Farmsley Center is the only building in Metropolis designed by a world-renowned contemporary architect.
(D) For major theater companies on national tours, the Farmsley Center is the first choice among venues in downtown Metropolis.
(E) Many suburbanites visit downtown Metropolis on weekends in order to see performances at the Farmsley Center.

Hi DiyaDutta,
Option D is 'For major theater companies on national tours, the Farmsley Center is the first choice among venues in downtown Metropolis.'-- The major companies would visit downtown Metropolis anyway and Farmsley center happens to be their first choice.
Farmsley center is not the cause of their visits-- the major theater companies are NOT visiting Downtown Metropolis with the purpose of visiting Farmsley Center

Hope this helps! :)

Option D is insufficient to strengthen as they mention about the major company visiting but does not cite any fact about them spending on any businesses around explicitly.

We will have to strengthen that the "Farmsley centre has been a major source of revenue for the downtown metropolis".
Option A says that farmsley chairman was honored for his contribution to the city". The contribution can be of many ways ( e.g. providing entertainment to the citizens etc ) . So it's not necessary that Farmsley contributed economically only and that's why it's chairman was honored. Reject option A.
Option B says that the restaurants near the farmsley were more expensive. If they are more expensive chances are high that people would avoid those restaurants. Option B is a weakener.Reject it.

Option C is clearly irrelevant. It does not mention anything about economic contributions.
Reject option C.
Option D says that major theater companies choose Farmsley as their first option in the city. But it does not mention anything about how downtown business is boosted by farmsley. Anyways the theater companies would visit the metropolis and the economic conditions of the metropolis would be boosted. It does not say how the Farmsley would contribute to the economic revitalization of the metropolis. Reject option D.

Option E says on weekends many people visit the Farmsley. If each one of them spends 83$ on the downtown business ( such as buying pop corns / ice cream or eating at the surrounding restaurants) , the downtown business would be boosted and the economy would be revitalized.
Option E is the winner.
Please give me kudo s if you liked my explanation.

Which of the following, if true, most strongly supports the chairman’s contention?

carcass
(A) The Metropolis Chamber of Commerce honored the Farmsley chairman this year for his contributions to the city.
This has nothing to do with the increase in revenue this is thoroughly out of context

carcass
(B) Restaurants near the Farmsley Center tend to be more expensive than restaurants in outlying areas.
This weakens rather than strengthen the argument giving us a sense as though the restaurant is the reason for the increased revenue

carcass
(C) The Farmsley Center is the only building in Metropolis designed by a world-renowned contemporary architect.
Similar reasoning as A

carcass
(D) For major theater companies on national tours, the Farmsley Center is the first choice among venues in downtown Metropolis.
This at first glance gives us the reasoning as though the national tours are the reason for the revenue generation hence we can eleminate

carcass
(E) Many suburbanites visit downtown Metropolis on weekends in order to see performances at the Farmsley Center.
With only the last option this gives us a solid reason as of why the farmsely center creates the requisite revenue

Therefore IMO E
