If 0.25 + x = y and y/x = 0.2, then y =

A. -1
B. -1/2
C. -1/4
D. -1/8
E. -1/16

We see that y = 0.2x, thus:

0.25 + x = 0.2x

0.25 = -0.8x

25 = -80x

x = 25/-80 = -5/16

So y = 0.2(-5/16) = -1/16.

Answer: E

I get a different result, why??

0.25+x=y thus

y/x= 0.25+x/x=0.2

0.25/x +x/x = 0.25/x +1 = 0.2

0.25=-0.8x
x=0.25/(-0.8)=-5/16

Any clues where I went wrong?

Berlin92

Question is asking y and you have found out x.
Try to find y and your answer will match OA

Thanks

If 0.25 + x = y and y/x = 0.2, then y =

A. -1
B. -1/2
C. -1/4
D. -1/8
E. -1/16

\(y = 0.2x\)
\(100y = 20x\)
\(5y = x\) --(1)

\(0.25 + x = y\)
\(25 + 100x = 100y\)
\(25(1 + 4x) = 25 * 4y\)
\(1 + 4x = 4y\)
\(1 + 4(5y) = 4y\) --(From 1)
\(1 + 20y = 4y\)
\(16y = -1\)
\(y = \frac{-1}{16}\), (E)
