I do not think this will qualify as a standard GMAT question. We are not expected to know the US currency.

Is it safe to assume that the GMAT will state the value of each coin or is it part of the difficulty of the question?

There are only nickels, dimes, and quarters in a piggy bank. If the number of quarters is twice the number of dimes, and the number of dimes is twice the number of nickels, what is the ratio of the total value of the quarters to the total value of the nickels?

(A) 4:1

(B) 10:1

(C) 16:1

(D) 20:1

(E) 40:1

A proper GMAT question will include necessary conversions, such as nickel = 5 cents, dime = 10 cents, quarter = 25 cents. However, you should have a few basic ones memorized, like 1 hour = 60 minutes, and similar fundamental conversions.

Check other Conversion problems to practice in Special Questions Directory.

Solution:

1. Pick a Simple Number: The number of dimes is based on nickels, and the number of quarters is based on dimes. The simplest starting point is the number of nickels. Let’s say there is 1 nickel.

2. Calculate Other Coin Quantities:
• Number of dimes = twice the number of nickels = 2 * 1 = 2 dimes.
• Number of quarters = twice the number of dimes = 2 * 2 = 4 quarters.

3. Calculate Total Values: Now, find the total value for the coins the question asks about (quarters and nickels).
• Total Value of Nickels = 1 nickel * 5 cents = 5 cents.
• Total Value of Quarters = 4 quarters * 25 cents = 100 cents.

4. Find the Ratio: The question asks for the ratio of the total value of the quarters to the total value of the nickels.
• Ratio = (Value of Quarters) : (Value of Nickels)
• Ratio = 100 : 5
• Simplify by dividing both sides by 5: 20:1

The correct answer is (D) 20:1

1 nickel = 5 cents
1 dime = 10 cents
1 quarters = 25 cents

Let the number of nickels, dimes and quarters in the piggy bank be n, d & q respectively

q = 2d
d = 2n

The ratio of the total value of the quarters to the total value of the nickels = 25q:5n = 25(2d):5n = 25(4n):5n = 20:1
