Hi
storm05, yes, a better score will always increase your chances, because you are part of the biggest applicant pool. It's hypercompetitive for Indians. 740 is a very solid score for top 15, top 20. One of my clients in Mumbai has this GMAT score and will be attending Ross in the fall, which he chose over Darden.
The bigger concern for you is work experience: you really would be shooting yourself in the foot applying with one year of work experience. Two years is the minimum; and to pull it off you need to have demonstrated leadership and impact. quantifiable results are best. Would recommend you wait for one year at least but preferably 2 years.
While low grades are not great, a strong GMAT will offset this to some degree. You will need to have a strong quant score. Don't worry so much about this; you will went to address why in the optional essay area but it's not a dealbreaker. if you want to a difficult/competitive school for engineering that is taken into consideration.
What do you have going on with regards to hobbies, community service, leadership, sports, everything outside of work? What is your motivation to get an MBA? What separates you from others, do you think? Focus on these things, maybe do Toastmasters to network and strengthen your public speaking skills. You want to seem likable and interesting; this is easier carried out when you have hobbies, interests and passions.
Given my feelings that you should wait another year, might be good to redo GMAT not because yours is bad but because a better one increases chances of admits and scholarships.
Hope this helps!
Cheers

Hi All,
I have a gmat score of 740. I am 23 Years old and have a work experience of 1 year.
I did my BTech and MTech from one of the best engineering colleges in India but my CGPA is quite low.
Other than gaining more experience, is there anything I can do to get into atleast one of top ten colleges?
Please suggest what other additions to my profile can make a difference.
Should I give GMAT again? Will a better score increase my chances?
Thanks
