How Can I Improve My Application

Question

Hello,

I plan to pursue an MBA degree in the fall of 2020 at a top 15 school school with the hopes of entering the consulting, private equity/venture capital, or corporate finance fields. Is my resume competitive enough to get into one of these schools? Is there anything else I can do to improve my resume? I am a little concerned that I don't have the typical experience of a lot of candidates (Deloitte, investment banking, etc.) Please see my main positions/accomplishments below:

Undergrad:
-Graduated Summa Cum Laude (3.9 GPA) from top 40 university

Hi Drewjr,

Your achievements and impact at both your professional/volunteer would be of value in the applications. So while you have mentioned what you do, you haven't mentioned what you have achieved in these roles. Nevertheless, continue making "meaningful" impact that helps your organizations grow. That would give you fodder for the application.

There really is no such thing as "typical" experience for those admitted to the M7 schools. Sure, there will be bankers and consultants and other traditional business professionals. But there will also be athletes, teachers, engineers, physicists, entrepreneurs, doctors, and everyone else in between. Many people go from Teach for America to top ranked business schools, and your GMAT score of 740 will allow you to be a competitive applicant within a wide range of schools.

Now, does a great profile guarantee admission to an M7? No! Every year applicants with 750+ are rejected in favor of others with scores in the 600's. There is always a small modicum of luck/randomness involved in the process as to why certain applicants get in and others don't. You've got to make sure every aspect of your application is done to the best of your abilities (recommendations, essay, story, GMAT, goals) and then its mostly out of your hands.

You've got great academic credentials and an interesting background coupled with strong leadership and volunteer experience. While I can't give you exact percentages on your chances at an M7 admission, I can tell you that you will be a very competitive applicant across the top 15 schools as long as you work hard during the application process.
