The price of sugar increases by 32%. A family reduces its consumption so that the expenditure of the sugar is up by 10% only. If the total consumption of sugar before the price rise was 10 kg per month, then the consumption of sugar per month at present (in kg) is:

A. 8.33
B. 8.5
C. 8.35
D. 8.75
E. None of the above

Someone give me a proper explanation. Expenditure and price and consumption. I am confused.

let initial price = 100$ so earlier expense was ; 100*10 ; 1000 $ per month price increase 32% ; 132$ is new price family can afford to buy at max by streching existing busdget by 10% ; 1000 * 1.1 ; 1100$ so at max they can afford to buy ; 1100/132 ; 8.33 kgs of sugar IMO A

Total Expenditure = Price * Amount consumed

Price goes up by 32% but total expenditure only by 10%. This means consumption goes down by some percentage.

Total Expenditure * (11/10) = Price * (132/100) * Amount consumed * x

For LHS to be same s RHS, we need
(132/100) * x = 11/10
x = 5/6

Since consumption becomes 5/6 of previous consumption, it reduces by 1/6.
(1/6) * 10 = 5/3

New consumption = 10 - 5/3 = 25/3 = 8.333 kg

The logic / formula here is very important. No need to by heart the formula.

We can deduce that expenditure = Price * Consumption

E=PC

Case 1 - before price increase , consumption was 10 KG

E=P*10

Case 2 - Expenditure is increased by 10% when price of sugar increases by 30%

1.1E=P*C(required)

Equate case 1 and case 2

C(required) = 11/1.32

=8.33 Kg

Let the price of sugar be 100 / kg.

let x be the new quantity post increase.

so x * 132 = 1100

x = 1100 / 132 => 275 / 33 ( divide by 11 ) => 25 / 3 => 8.33 Kg.

let say price 100/-per Kg of sugar total expense 1000..after price increases new price 132/- and total expenditure increases by 10% means 1100....simply divide 1100 by 132 and got 8.33 .......above sol are too lenghy...

#New price with 32% increase is 132.

& 10% increase is 110

New 132.... Before 100
||| 1..............100/132
||| 110............(100/132)*110

=250/3

If 100..... Gets 10kg
||| 1............10/100
||(250/3)........(10/100)*250/3

=8.33
