A business executive and his client are charging their dinner tab on the executive's expense account. The company will only allow them to spend a total of 50$ for the meal. Assuming that they will pay 7% in sales tax for the meal and leave a 15% tip, what is the most their food can cost?

A. 39.55$
B. 40.63$
C. 41.63$
D. 42.15$
E. 43.15$

meal cost they can afford with taxes will have to reverse calculated
50/1.07 = 46.7
46.7/1.15 = 40.63

In such questions, what's the general rule for application of tip? Is it applied over the cost of the meal (excluding tax) or over the cost of the meal (including tax)?

VeritasKarishma Bunuel chetan2u can you please help here?

The question should specify though usually the tip is calculated on the complete cheque amount so you should use successive percentage changes - increase of 7% and then increase of 15%.

Letting n = the cost of the food, we can create the equation:

50 = 1.07n x 1.15

50 = 1.2305n

40.63 = n

x=10^5/(2461)
x=10000/(~2500)

Deconstructing the Question

Total allowed expense = 50.

They must pay:
7% sales tax
15% tip

Total multiplier:

\(1 + 0.07 + 0.15 = 1.22\)

Let food cost be F.

Step-by-step

\(F \times 1.22 = 50\)

\(F = \frac{50}{1.22}\)

\(\frac{50}{1.22} \approx 40.98\)

Closest answer choice:
