Hi luckluck123,

The good news is that 720 is a great start! To improve your GMAT score to a higher level, you need to go through GMAT quant and verbal carefully to find your exact weaknesses, fill gaps in your knowledge, and strengthen your skills. The overall process will be to find weaker areas, learn all about how to answer questions of types that you aren't that comfortable with now, and do dozens of practice questions category by category, basically driving your score up point by point.

For example, if you find that you are not strong in answering Number Properties questions, then carefully review the conceptual underpinnings of how to answer Number Properties questions and practice by answering 50 or more questions just from Number Properties: LCM, GCF, units digit patterns, divisibility, remainders, etc. When you are working on learning to answer questions of a particular type, start off taking your time, and then seek to speed up as you get more comfortable answering questions of that type. As you do such practice, do a thorough analysis of each question that you don't get right. If you got a remainder question wrong, ask yourself why. Did you make a careless mistake? Did you not properly apply the remainder formula? Was there a concept you did not understand in the question? By carefully analyzing your mistakes, you will be able to efficiently fix your weaknesses and in turn improve your GMAT quant skills. Number Properties is just one example; follow this process for all quant topics.

Each time you strengthen your understanding of a topic and your skill in answering questions of a particular type, you increase your odds of hitting your score goal. You know that there are types of questions that you are happy to see and types that you would rather not see, and types of questions that you take a long time to answer correctly. Learn to more effectively answer the types of questions that you would rather not see, and make them into your favorite types. Learn to correctly answer in two minutes or less questions that you currently take five minutes to answer. By finding, say, a dozen weaker quant areas and turning them into strong areas, you will make great progress toward hitting your quant score goal. If a dozen areas turn out not to be enough, strengthen some more areas.

You can work on verbal in a similar manner. Let’s say you are reviewing Critical Reasoning. Be sure that you practice a large number of Critical Reasoning questions: Strengthen and Weaken the Argument, Resolve the Paradox, find the Conclusion, Must be True, etc. As you go through the questions, do a thorough analysis of each question that you don't get correct. If you missed a Weaken question, ask yourself why. Did you make a careless mistake? Did you not recognize what the question was asking? Did you skip over a key detail in an answer choice? Getting GMAT verbal questions right is a matter of what you know, what you see, and what you do. So, any time that you don't get one right, you can seek to identify what you had to know to get the right answer, what you had to see that you didn't see, and what you could have done differently to arrive at the correct answer.

So, work on accuracy and generally finding correct answers, work on specific weaker areas one by one to make them strong areas, and when you take a practice GMAT or the real thing, take all the time per question available to do your absolute best to get right answers consistently. The GMAT is essentially a game of seeing how many right answers you can get in the time allotted. Approach the test with that conception in mind, and focus intently on the question in front of you with one goal in mind: getting a CORRECT answer.

In order to follow the path described above, you may need some new verbal and quant materials, so take a look at the GMAT Club reviews for the best quant and verbal courses.

Hi!

Recently, I've decided to try and re-take the GMAT to get a slightly higher score. I'm already pretty happy with the score that I have now, but since I have some free time now, I thought I'd try to get to the point where I'm scoring > 750. I've been studying for a few weeks now, and I try to do a practice test at the end of every week to gauge my progress. The problem is, all three times I've taken the practice tests, I've scored the same score: 720. This is what I got the first time I wrote my GMAT, and I can't seem to get past this hurdle.

Any tips on how to start seeing some improvement? The tests I took were 1PR practice test and 2 Official tests (I still have Exam 5&6 leftover, which I'm planning on saving until later in my prep). The types of questions I'm having the most difficulty with are:

- In the quant section, it seems kind of mixed. The only thing I'd say I'm bad at is Geometry (which I've been consistently bad at since ... ever). Everything else is just a mixture of different topics

- In the verbal section, I definitely struggle with the sentence correction questions. On my last practice test, I got 9 questions wrong in total: 1 CR, 1 RC and 7 SC ... I'm not quite sure how to get better at these questions.

Any help would be appreciated. I'm looking to take the test again in about a month and a half, or less!

Hi .
My 2 cent.. We need to diagnose the problem accurately . Perhaps you can discuss your error log with me..

Test takers, with the 690+ have come to me..
I have worked with them.. Together we pushed the score to 750.

Based on my past experience, I feel
1. You have not come across the really tough questions in the different sections.
2. You are making mistakes in question 3,4,5 in verbal and quant section.
3. in RC ,if you are able to narrow options to two, and then, if you are still guessing.. that means you need to develop your critical reading skills, because in RC , only one answer option will emerge.
4. in SC, you can target 100% accuracy as there are 25 errors tested in SC. Also its based on logic. So if your able to apply rules/logic.. you should be able to get all questions correct.

Also
How many RC passages have you completed till date?

Doing more mock tests wont improve your score, you need to get your concepts straight and your logical thinking right.( for example in critical reasoning are you answering questions based on gut feeling or is there a logic?

Actual GMAT is tougher than GMAT prep or OG.. Doesn't make sense for GMAC to give hard questions in the prep material..

Hello Luckluck,

A score of 720 (Q49/V40) is a wow! It is a great start, and considering your target score of 750+ seems realistic. The breakdown of your score (V40, Q49) gives a clear plan to follow:

For verbal – Revise your grammar basics by GMAT grammar book or Aristotle grail for sentence correction. For RC and CR, try solving the 730+ level question.

For Math - We recommend you learn quick and alternative approaches to solve questions to save you the time. Q 51 shortcut will help you do so. You may check our free lesson plan, take a diagnostic test, and can strengthen your concept related to any topic. For Geometry, check a free-lesson plan on our website or connect with our expert to have insight and conceptual ground for all geometry concepts. (It is one of the topics that frequently appears on the GMAT).
