They need to copy edit 100/8 = 12.5 articles per hour to finish the job. If A is editing 3.5 per hour, B must edit the rest, or 9 per hour.

their combined rate is \(\frac{100}{8}\) = 12.5

journalist B rate = combined rate - journalist A's rate
= 12.5 - 3.5
= 9 (B)

Two journalists have 8 hours in which to copy edit a total of 100 articles. If Journalist A copy edits at a steady rate of 3.5 articles per hour, how many articles per hour must Journalist B copy edit in order to complete the assignment on time?

(A) 12.5
(B) 9
(C) 8
(D) 4.5
(E) 3

rate of A ; would help 3.5*8 ; 28 articles so
100-28 ; 72 articles rate of B must be 72/8 ; 9

(A) 12.5
(B) 9
(C) 8
(D) 4.5
(E) 3

Total Work = 100 [A+B]
Total Time = 8 [A+B]
A's part
Amount = Rate * Time
A = 3.5 * 8 = 28 Articles

100 - 28 = 72 Articles for B to be completed .
Given 8 hours for B as well ,
72/8 = 9 Articles Per Hour

B is the answer

(A) 12.5
(B) 9
(C) 8
(D) 4.5
(E) 3

We can create the equation:

3.5(8) + 8n = 100

28 + 8n = 100

8n = 72

n = 9

Answer: B

Given:
Task to be done = 100 articles / 8 hours = 12.5 articles / hour
Journalist A copy edits at a steady rate of 3.5 articles per hour

Question:
