A and B are incorrect due to subject verb disagreement. The subject of the plural verb “suggest” is singular “the increase”. A singular verb is needed.

D and E are out because of the the use of usually makes the sentence awkward. Usually is an adverb, it should modify a verb, an adjective or another adverb. Here usually is seen as modifying the noun “host” hence not correct.

C is the correct answer. The subject “the number” agrees with the verb “suggests”. In addition, “usual” is an adjective which modifies the noun “host” and this makes much better sense than the use of “usually” in D and E to awkwardly modify the noun “host”.

The increase (in the land...) - a singular noun, so “suggests” is needed here. - eliminate A, B

Between C, D, E

the more usual host vs. the more usually host

“usual” is to modify the noun “host”. So adj. form of usual is required here instead of usually (adverb form)

Therefore, C is the correct answer

The increase in land area which the virus has colonized suggest that birds are the more usual host for the virus, strengthening researchers original contention that migratory birds have contributed to the virus's spread across the nation.

The sentence has S-V error, redundancy error and idiom error. Based on S-V agreement aspect ‘A’ and ‘B’ can be removed immediately. The construction ‘usually host’ doesn’t seem to make sense. Using adverb creates un-necessarily meaning problem.

(A) suggest that birds are the more usual host for the virus, - WRONG. S-V error.
(B) suggest that birds are the more usual host to the virus, - WRONG. S-V error.
(C) suggests that birds are the more usual host for the virus, - CORRECT. As discussed above.
(D) suggests that birds are the more usually host for the virus, - WRONG. As discussed above.
(E) suggests that birds are the more usually host of the virus, - WRONG. As discussed above.

Answer (C).

The best answer is C. In choices A and B, the verb suggest does not agree with its singular subject, rise. Choices D and E use the adverb usually where the adjective form is required.

'The increase in land area' acts as the subject, so we need verb 'suggests', we need adjective 'usual' to refer noun 'host'.
so, C is correct

(A) suggest that birds are the more usual host for the virus,
(B) suggest that birds are the more usual host to the virus,
(C) suggests that birds are the more usual host for the virus,
(D) suggests that birds are the more usually host for the virus,
(E) suggests that birds are the more usually host of the virus,

(D) suggests that birds are the more usually host for the virus,
(E) suggests that birds are the more usually host of the virus,

'Increase' is singular so the correct usage is suggests. Eliminate A and B
The original sentence referred to the 'host for the virus' that is usual. If the adjective 'usual' is changed to the adverb 'usually' than it would change the meaning of the sentence. This change would suggest that there are also other usual hosts apart from birds but birds are more usual.
