The author does not need to assume that perception of passion can predict divorce rates. Infact, there is no evidence in the argument to support C.

A nicely states the logical leap author makes to make his conclusion.

Data collected on married couples in the U.S. show that couples who lived together before marriage tend to view their marriages as more passionate than those who did not live together. Based on this finding, a psychologist has suggested that couples who did not reside together before marriage are more likely to divorce than their peers who lived together.

The psychologist's conclusion depends on which of the following assumptions?

A. Divorce is less common among couples who see their relationships as passionate.

B. Couples who live together tend to be more serious about marriage and less likely to divorce.

C. Perception of passion is one of many factors that can predict divorce rates.

D. The U.S. divorce rate has been increasingly steadily over the past decade.

E. Couples often stay in relationships despite a lack of passion

my question is why not C ?

Guys, please help me, need your input for my reasoning
Here is what I thought.

P: Live together -> More Passionate
C: Not Live Together -> Likely to divorce

More passionate = Unlikely to divorce

A. Divorce is less common in passionate couple

Negation technique:
Divorce is not less common (equally or even more common) in passionate couple which then imply that you cannot predict the perception of passion to predict divorce rate. So, with negation technique, the argument will fall apart. This is an assumption.

C. Perception of passion is one of many factors that can predict divorce rate

Negation Technique:
Perception of passion is not one of many factors that can predict divorce rate. IMHO This can be interpreted into two scenarios:
1. Perception of passion is the only factor that can predict divorce rate or;
2. Perception of passion is not the factor that can predict divorce rate at all (there are many factors which can predict divorce rate excluding the perception of passion).

Based on the negation technique result in interpretation number 1, the argument will still be valid (so this interpretation is not the assumption)

Based on the negation technique result in interpretation number 2, the argument will fall apart as the perception of passion cannot be used to predict divorce rate. So, if the interpretation is this one, this can be used as an assumption.

However, given that answer B has two different interpretations this choice is eliminated, because the question asked about the assumption that the argument depends on. You cannot depend on something which has two interpretations.

That is why picked A. Please evaluate my reasoning

Hey,
So i had a doubt in the paragraph it is mentioned Living together==More passionate, but that doesn't mean that people dont live together are not passionate. There is a difference in degree of passion, this is what i am understandiing from the paragraph because of which i did not select answer A.
Please help me clear this.
