Yep, if anyone can help. not quite sure how to approach these.
The passage sets up a scenario and gives us an "apparent conflict."
Here's the scenario:
- Witnesses watch a simulated crime.
- Then, they're questioned by someone who is trying to get them to testify inaccurately about the crime.
- Finally, they're questioned by someone trying to help them fix the inaccuracies of their previous testimony.
And here's the apparent conflict:
- Some people are MORE accurate than average during the first round of questioning.
- This same group is also LESS accurate than average during the second round of questioning.
To resolve the apparent conflict, we need an answer choice that explains why this same group is MORE accurate at first, and LESS accurate later.
Here's (C):
Quote:
(C) These witnesses were less inclined than most of the other witnesses to be influenced in their testimony by the nature of the questioning.
(C) tells us that these particular witnesses were less swayed in their testimony than the other witnesses.
What would that do to the results of the first round of questioning?
Remember that the first questioner is trying to get people to
make mistakes. So, the people who are less influenced by this questioner are going to have fewer inaccuracies in their testimony. So far, so good!
But what would happen during the second round of questioning?
Now, the questioner is trying to help people
fix their previous mistakes. Our group of witnesses who are not easily influenced are now going to stick to their guns, and insist that whatever mistakes they made in their testimony are correct. The more suggestible crowd, on the other hand, would change their testimony and correct the mistakes they made in the first round of questioning. So, our group of stubborn witnesses might end up with more mistakes after this round than the more influenceable witnesses. That's exactly what the passage told us.
(C) provides a reason for the same group of witnesses to be more accurate in their first testimony and less accurate in their second testimony. So (C) helps to resolve the apparent conflict, and is the correct answer.
I hope that helps!
