Percentage increase in Share X = (41-40)*100/40 =1/40*100=2.5%
Percentage increase in Share Y = (28.5-25)*100/25 = 3.5*4%=14%

Difference
14%-2.5% = 11.5%

At the opening of a trading day, stock X had a value of $40.00 per share and stock Y had a value of $25 per share. At the closing of the day, stock X had a value of $41.00 per share and stock Y had a value of $28.50 per share. For the trading day, the percent increase in the value of stock Y was how many percentage points great than the percent increase of the value of stock X?

A) 2.5
B) 6.25
C) 10
D) 11.5
E) 12.5

* Also Can anyone show a trick for calculating 3.5/ 25? Should you change the 3.5 to a whole number?

Solution

    • Increase in the stoke X’s value \(= 41 – 40 = $1\)
      o So, percent increase in stoke X’s value = \(\frac{1}{40}*100 = 2.5\)%
    • Increase in the stoke Y’s value \(= 28.50 – 25 = $3.5\)
      o So, percent increase in stoke Y’s value = \(\frac{3.5}{25}*100 = \frac{350}{25} =14\)%
    • Therefore, the difference between percent increase in stoke Y’s and stoke X’s value \(= 14 – 2.5 =11.5\) percent points.
Thus, the correct answer is Option D.

Percent change : \(\frac{After - Before }{ Before}\) * 100

Percent increase for X: \(\frac{41 - 40}{40}\) * 100 = 2.5

Percent increase for Y : \(\frac{28.50 - 25}{25}\) * 100 = 14

Y was how many percentage points great than the percent increase in the value of stock X: Y - X

=> 14.5 - 2.5 = 11.5

To answer your question:
A trick for calculating 3.5/25 would be to multiply it by 4/4 to get 14/100 which is equal to 14%
