Could you elucidate Q7, B
Thanks beforehand.

Option (B) is wrong because it fails to mention the main topic of jury impartiality. (B) represents the purpose of Paragraph 1, since alerting the reader to the effects of mass media on the courts is accomplished by line 13.

Thank you

I am unable to eliminate E.
"Since it is generally
believed that people who know the facts of a case are
more likely than those who do not to hold an opinion
about the case" IS E incorrect because of the word "generally" in the paragraph ?

And for A, is it incorrect because the flaws of Voire dire the opinion of the critics and not the author ?

You are 100% spot-on at question 4, (E) reflects the “general belief” cited in lines 5-8, but the author doesn’t exactly sign onto that. Indeed, he avoids altogether the question of who is more opinionated, to focus on the broader and more important question of whether pre-trial opinions by definition lead to jury partiality.

(A) is way too pessimistic about jury impartiality. Voir dire is merely another example of a technique used to impanel juries that are impartial in the traditional sense. The author has a different sense of impartiality in mind.

Hope it helps

Explanation

1. Which one of the following most accurately expresses the main point of the passage?

Difficulty Level: 550-600

Explanation

If you try to pre-phrase this author’s main point—you have to figure that it’s got to focus on Para 4, since Para 1 merely explains an alleged dilemma, while Para 2 and Para 3 detail controversial and ultimately ineffective ways to combat it. It’s Para 4 where the author really steps in and says, “Hey, let’s look at this jury impartiality thing from a new angle.” And only (E) picks up on this, directly echoing lines 51-58’s sentiment that an informed “and even opinionated” jury—in contrast to the standard definition—is potentially the most impartial.

(A) The alleged “flaws” in “traditional methods for ensuring...impartiality” are not the author’s charges, but those of critics whom he cites in Para 2 and Para 3. And (A)’s call for action—”must be eliminated”—is never even hinted at.

(B) merely picks up on one tiny detail, mentioned in lines 43-46. Since this sentence could easily be excised to no loss to the passage, it cannot possibly encompass a global idea here.

(C), (D) Both are tempting for those who believe that voir dire is the author’s main interest, but of course it is not. Voir dire gets more space than other conventional methods of enhancing jury impartiality because it is the one favored by judges, but in the end the author’s chief interest is in redefining the whole problem, as (E) understands.
