“To reverse the deterioration of the postal service, the government should raise
the price of postage stamps. This solution will no doubt prove effective, since the
price increase will generate larger revenues and will also reduce the volume of
mail, thereby eliminating the strain on the existing system and contributing to
improved morale.”
My Attempt --->
The author suggests that in order to reduce the deterioration of the postal service, the government should raise the price of postage stamps. The author assumes that this is a fool proof solution, which will be effective in generating higher revenues and reducing the mail volumes. The author believes that increasing the postage stamp rates will aid in eliminating strain on the existing system and would contribute to improving the morale of the employees of the postal service company. The author makes these assumptions without providing a proper reference to what he exactly means by “deterioration” of the postal service. There could be multiple causes that can deteriorate the postal service. Without providing a proper indication of the root causes that result in deterioration of the service, the solution provided by the author may or may not solve the exact issue on hand. A thorough analysis of the root causes should be conducted before arriving at a conclusion that increasing postage stamp rates will solve the problem of postal service deterioration.
The author fails to mention what are the causes that are responsible for the deterioration of services. These causes could be lower productivity of the employees, inadequate infrastructure to serve a multitude of customers, higher attrition due to lower job satisfaction, low pay, etc. Without understanding the exact cause it may not prove efficacious in increasing the price of postage stamps. For example, if the employees of the postal service company are not happy with their pay in the first place then increasing postal stamp rates may not solve the issue of poor service. In such a case, the author should explore other solutions in order to address the right root cause.
