Hi All,
Need inputs from experts.

Just received a shocker in the form of GMAT score 700 (Q51 V33).
A shocker because, Just 2 days before the actual exam I scored 760 (Q50 V44) in GMATPrep, under the exact testing situation.
Moreover in the 4 GMATPreps I took (2 free ones + 2 paid ones), I scored V 41, V 38, V 42, V 44.
In just one week before the actual exam, I scored V42 and V44 in GMATPrep, and V45 in Manhattan Prep.
I am discussing verbal only as I scored Q51 (was expecting Q50 only, consistent with my Gmatprep scores, so this Q51 is the only silver lining)

In all the mock tests I took (have taken almost 35+ mock tests in last few months from all the available good quality tests including GMATPrep, Manhattan Prep, Kaplan Test Prep, Veritas , e-gmat, Expert's global , Gmat club tests) I scored V40+ in almost all the tests and avg. scores of around 730-740 and must have practiced more than 8000+ questions (quant and verbal ) from all the good quality sources (with 90%+ accuracy while solving under 90 secs)
In the last 15 days leading to the test, I was comfortably able to correctly solve even the hardest RC, SC, CR questions from GMATPrep free test questions with almost 100% accuracy within 90 secs. ( I must have solved almost all 2000+ of these questions from gmatclub collection)

It seems may be I was too exhausted leading to the test, but does that make so much of a difference to cause a drop from V44 to V33 in just 2 days from GMATPrep. I know I was anxious and a bit panicked as this was my first test) but that should not make such a huge difference?

Just to mention, I have done a lot of reading in recent past ( Just because of the thirst for knowledge and for gmat preparation) and quite comfortable in comprehending even the most complex of material/ideas from lots of good quality sources including Scientific American, Nautilus, Aeon, Guardian Long Read, The Economist (Particularly material in Geology, Cosmology, Molecular Biology & Genetics, Archeology, Business and Management Studies, Gender Relations - Modern History, Early Modern to Modern History, Anthropology, Ecology and Environment, Modern American Social History), which are the primary focus areas of GMAT.

Would appreciate inputs from people with understanding and experience of the mistakes candidates make that might lead them to an anomaly such as this.

Hey hi,

Do not get disappointed. You can always improve your score provided you identify the reasons for the drop and work on your weak areas. There could be two possible reasons for the drop in the score:

1.Test day pressure: We all might have experienced this at some point in our life. We prepare so well for the test but we mess it up on the test day. We take the exam too seriously and as a result the nerves take control. GMAT is a 3 and half hour-long test. So, to perform well, your concentration has to be at its best. And a lot of students are unaware of the 8-minute break and eventually lose a few minutes by the time they return from the break. So, it’s always recommended to read the guidelines, know your test center before-hand and give the test with a calm mind.

2.Inconsistent application skills: GMAT is an exam which tests your application skills. But students sometimes get lucky during their mocks and somehow get the right answer without using the right methodology. And this obviously doesn’t happen in the actual test. So, students often find the questions to be tougher than the ones in the mocks. That’s the reason I often tell students to analyze the solutions of the questions even if they got them right because you might have used a different approach or you might come across an efficient method in the solution, which can save you a minute or two in the actual test.

So, before you take mocks, make sure you learn the concepts of all the topics, learn the relevant methodologies to solve the questions and then practice a few questions of that topic. And after you take a mock, make sure you review the detailed solution of each question. By reviewing, I mean to go through the solution, compare your approach with the right one and identify at which step you made a mistake. This will help you to learn the right methodology. And once you start getting your desired score consistently in the mocks, you can book the slot for the actual test.

As it is often the case that, people are not aware of their weaknesses and that is also one of the major reasons that anxiety gets better off them in the actual test, because there might be areas in which you would not have followed the structured approach and ESR is one sure shot way to make a plan that can help you.

And a mentor’s guidance is always an added advantage for your GMAT Prep. Make sure to get in touch with a mentor, understand what’s wrong with your approach, come up with a study plan and start studying.
