How is the answer B? Although I would agree that if you are self reliant, yet perceptive and caring then you are a true nineties man. But Someone who would has seen the movie and is not self reliant, perceptive and caring need not misrepresent himself. He could perhaps not represent himself a nineties man in the first place and had watched the movie just for fun or any other reason but nineties man.
Can someone please explain what I am missing here?

I am not an expert but allow me to try and address your query

the passage says two premises
1) If someone is a true nineties man-----> he should be self reliant, yet perceptive and caring
2) If someone is a true nineties man-----> he must see the movie

Now option (B) says " A man who has seen the movie but is still not perceptive and caring misrepresents himself as a true Nineties man"

The contrapositive of Premise (2) would be
He is not self reliant, perceptive or caring----> He is not a true nineties man
But he has seen the movie which is a must see for a true nineties man.
But he does not fulfil the necessary to condition to become a true nineties man ( ie. being self reliant, perceptive...)
So he is misrepresenting himself as a true nineties man

A movie publicist accompanied a new movie release with the following endorsement: This movie is a must-see for men and women who are in or want to have a committed relationship in the Nineties. While the leading actor in the movie has unrefined edges, he eventually becomes sensitive and caring. The leading actress begins to understand and appreciate her lover's uniquely male characteristics without booting him out the door. If you are a true Nineties man or woman—self-reliant, yet perceptive and caring—you must see this movie!

If the publicist's claims about the movie are true, which one of the following is also true?
An Inference question :)

(A) Men and women who are perceptive and caring are also self-reliant.
-This statement is true for the "true Nineties", but may not be true for ALL men and women.

(B) A man who has seen the movie but is still not perceptive and caring misrepresents himself as a true Nineties man.
- CORRECT. This option can be inferred from the following statements:
1.While the leading actor in the movie has unrefined edges, he eventually becomes sensitive and caring.
2.If you are a true Nineties man or woman—self-reliant, yet perceptive and caring—you must see this movie!

Basically what this options tells us is that if a man represents himself as a true Nineties, but is not caring and perceptive even after watching the movie stated in the passage, then he is misrepresenting himself.

(C) People who go to the movie described in the passage are more sensitive than people who go to action thriller movies.
- We can't infer anything about people who go to action movies. Maybe this movie is also an action movie? Who knows! :D

(D) No other movie recognizes true Nineties men and women.
- We can't infer anything about any other movie from the content of this passage.

(E) Most everyone would recognize the type of man or woman who would go to see the movie described in the passage.
This can't be inferred; Maybe true, may not be true.

Answer B.

If the publicist's claims about the movie are true, which one of the following is also true?

(A) Men and women who are perceptive and caring are also self-reliant. - WRONG. Goes against the word 'yet' in the conditional that is the conclusion of the passage. In general, it is not so the case but for this movie some people might be and which is where this advertisement is targeted at. They are the conditions not a general nature of man and woman.

(B) A man who has seen the movie but is still not perceptive and caring misrepresents himself as a true Nineties man. - CORRECT. Someone who's gone for the movie must have been self reliant and ironically perceptive and caring. But if it's not so then there must be a misrepresentation on his part or anything else.

(C) People who go to the movie described in the passage are more sensitive than people who go to action thriller movies. - WRONG. No such comparison is inferable as only one movie is discussed.

(D) No other movie recognizes true Nineties men and women. - WRONG. Extreme but most importantly it can't be inferred.

(E) Most everyone would recognize the type of man or woman who would go to see the movie described in the passage. - WRONG. Not necessarily true, particularly 'most'.

The two condition necessary are self reliant and perceptive and caring that must be met to be a true Nineties man or woman.

Answer B.

Hi napolean92728,

could you help with option (B)

the stem says that a true Nineties man is self reliant
however, being nineties - self reliant + perceptive and caring is not true for the entire 90's men,
perceptive and caring Nineties man can be a subset of the entire 90's people - who are self reliant,
this is clear by the word "yet"

so we can have some on who is in their nineties to have watched a movie, but is not perceptive and caring
the stem just says that 90's man - self reliant + caring should see the film

since we can have the former case, can we say that the 90's man who is self reliant but not caring has misrepresented himself as a true nineties man

this can only be the case when it's given "Caring" to be a necessary condition for one who is in their nineties

another fault with this option is that, it is assuming only nineties men watch the movie
but it need not be, we can have different age groups watch a movie, not be caring and yet misrepresent themselves as a true nineties man

Your points:
  1. The passage describes "true Nineties" people as both self-reliant AND perceptive/caring (connected by "yet")
  2. These characteristics are not necessarily universal for all people in the 90s
  3. Being self-reliant doesn't automatically mean being perceptive and caring
  4. The movie might attract viewers from different age groups
However, the critical reasoning that still makes (B) the strongest answer lies in the publicist's specific language:
The passage states: "If you are a true Nineties man or woman—self-reliant, yet perceptive and caring—you must see this movie!"
The word "yet" is crucial here. It suggests:
  • Self-reliance is a baseline characteristic
  • Being perceptive and caring is an additional, distinguishing quality
  • To be a "true" Nineties person, one must possess BOTH qualities
So, someone who is:
  • Self-reliant, BUT
  • NOT perceptive and caring
Would indeed be misrepresenting themselves as a "true Nineties" person according to this definition.
The other options have more significant logical flaws:
  • (A) makes an unsupported universal claim
  • (C) introduces an irrelevant comparison
  • (D) makes an absolute statement about other movies
  • (E) generalizes beyond the text's claims
While your points about potential limitations are valid, (B) remains the most logically supported answer based on the publicist's precise language and implied definition of a "true Nineties" person.

Hey,
thanks for the detailed reply

however,
from your pointers,
you have mentioned "Being perceptive and caring is an additional, distinguishing quality"
This makes it clear that to be a nineties man, one has to be self reliant. Being perceptive and caring is an add on and is not required to be possessed by all the 90's people, neither is it required that all 90's people have to have both qualities. They might be self reliant only and be called a 90's man.

Because of the connector "yet", it raises a doubt whether the add on is a necessary condition for being true 90's man or not
I feel the stem could have been more precisely worded

But I won't disagree with you on the fact that out of all the options, (B) is the better one

@RiyaJ0032 I would suggest you to read my answer and the question carefully one more time, you are messing it up. Herein both the qualities are required for the person to be called a "true" Nineties person.

Do you imply that -
being self reliant does not entail being perceptive/caring
there might be 100 self reliant people, but of those only 60 might be self reliant + caring
however, when it comes to being a true 90's man, he/she is both self reliant + perceptive/caring
therefore, being a true 90's man is required to have these 2 qualities
the word "yet" indicates that perceptive/caring is a subset of the bigger group self reliant
but 90's people are both

I think this has what been implied
what I "messed up" was considering "yet" to be indicative of only 90's person (so they may not necessarily have both qualities)

but since you asked me to reread it again, I think the implication of "yet" is not for the 90's man but for the populace in general,
making 90's man to have both qualities
