Hi everyone,
I am a college student and I was preparing for CAT. However, during the preparation, I realized the Quant was tough and wasn’t aligned with what I wanted to do. I evaluated GMAT and looked at the options I will have post GMAT. I spoke to my parents about it and decided to go ahead with GMAT coaching. I didn’t really want to spend too much time experimenting. I was very clear that I would need help.
I learned a lot after I started my GMAT preparation. And scoring a
GMAT 670 (Q46, V36), improved my confidence in my language skills.

You can learn a lot by yourself. But, it takes a good mentor to guide you in the right direction and help you approach the GMAT the right way.
I realized this once I started my GMAT journey and that is why I am sharing my story with you all.

My Background
I’m
Yugam Bharadwaj I’m currently pursuing my
BBA course at
Nirma University in Ahmedabad. My parents come from a defense background and due to this, I had no background in business. It was really challenging for me to get into the business field. But, I believed that this was a challenge I could probably overcome with time and that is how I decided to continue with it.
I was interested in doing a course in
international business. The course is not very popular in India. And,
to study in universities abroad, I needed to take the GMAT.
So, when I was in my second year of college, a lot of my classmates started preparing for the CAT exam & even I did the same.
But, I was sure that I wanted to do a course in international business. In India, we have very few colleges that offer this course. With this, the chances of getting an admission also decrease.
And, I realized that it is important to get international exposure if you want to pursue international business. Getting your master’s degree from a university abroad will be able to help with this aspect.
How I Decided to Start My GMAT Preparation
I was preparing for CAT until March 2020. It is after the lockdown that I decided to prepare for the GMAT.
I was just scrolling through to read up more about the GMAT and how to prepare for the exam. That is when I saw
CrackVerbal’s YouTube videos. I had already watched a lot of their Youtube videos by then. I had been following Arun sir since class 12th or my first year of college. I knew his teaching style and I enjoyed watching his videos.
So, I left my CAT coaching and enrolled in
CrackVerbal’s GMAT On-Demand Program coaching.
A CrackVerbal team member took me through the entire process and that is how my GMAT journey began.
How I Chose GMAT over CAT for the Good
CAT and GMAT are different in many ways.
In terms of preparation for Quant in the CAT exam, you need to learn a lot of formulas. But in GMAT Quant, there is a lot of logic. Even, the Verbal part of the GMAT is a lot of logic. And more importantly, unlike the CAT, the GMAT is an adaptive test.
The GMAT actually tests your performance under pressure. This is because you cannot just apply a formula and get the right answer. You need to apply the concept and the logic in both sections. This is very similar to a manager’s life in an office. They need to make a decision within the given time limit.
This point is a huge difference between CAT and GMAT. And initially, it was challenging for me. I was already new to CAT preparation. And shifting from that preparation was quite difficult for me.
My Initial GMAT Prep Journey
Due to the COVID scenario, my college did not resume in the months of April, May, June in 2020. So, I decided that I will do my internship work in the morning and focus on my GMAT prep in the evening.
I had enrolled for the
CrackVerbal’s GMAT On-Demand Program. I prefer to study at my own pace and time. So, in the evenings, I used to go through the videos and practice questions. During the weekends, I used to go through GMAT tests. I didn’t have internship work during the weekends. So, I thought it was the best time for me to take the tests and assess myself.
I would say that I was very weak in Verbal in the beginning. But I was good in Quant. So, I decided to start with the Verbal section. It took me some time to prepare for the GMAT Verbal section. To be precise, it took me two months.
Whenever I used to go through the GMAT Verbal questions, I used to feel that Sentence Correction (SC) was really hard for me. And, I started with that module. But once I understood the set of rules and the logic, I realized that it was easy.
I focused so much on Sentence Correction that I was weak when it came to Critical Reasoning (CR). I became so strong in SC that my accuracy went up to 90% but when it came to CR, my accuracy went down to 30%.
So, I started scoring very well in the GMAT section that I was initially scared of.

But I realized that on the GMAT, you need to have a decent score in all the sections.
I decided to have a call with one of the
CrackVerbal mentors and it is during this session that I learned how to approach a CR question.
We had 2-3 sessions in which she taught me CR and how to approach the questions.
When it came to RC, the way
Arun sir taught it was
perfect. I could apply all the strategies that he taught and I scored well.
Taking the Mock Tests
Initially, I thought that taking more mock tests will help me score better.
But, it was nothing like that.
When I started preparing for the GMAT and when I watched Arun sir’s videos, I got to know that the number of questions you solve is not important. The focus should be on the quality of the questions you solve and the analysis. You need to analyze your questions well. That is what will help you understand why you made an error. It took me some time to analyze my performance. And my
CrackVerbal mentor had instructed me not to take mock tests just for the sake of it. She had suggested that I take it only at a certain stage.
So, what I used to do is, whenever I took a mock test, I used to go back and analyze the questions. Especially in the CR section. My accuracy was very low in the beginning. In order to improve it, I used to go back and analyze it - both the right and wrong questions.
I took a total of five mock tests. I felt that was sufficient.
My GMAT Attempts
I took the GMAT twice but I scored the highest on my first attempt. I got a GMAT 670 and I went ahead with it for my applications.
CrackVerbal helped me get a Master in Strategy and Management of International Business program admit at ESSEC Business School in France.

This has been my GMAT journey.
A lot of things on the GMAT were not like what I had expected them to be. The SC section is the biggest example.
I am sure that you guys will come across such instances too and I hope that my GMAT journey will help you at some point in your GMAT preparation.
I hope you all get your target GMAT scores. All the very best!

Regards,
Yugam
