In a certain school, 40 more than 1/3 of all the students are taking a science course and 1/4 of those taking a science course are taking physics. If 1/8 of all the students in the school are taking physics, how many students are in the school ?

(A) 240
(B) 300
(C) 480
(D) 720
(E) 960

When I saw this question, i thought its a venn diagram question and tried to resolve.

Let the total no of students be 8x

So, students taking physics = x ; students taking science = 4x

Now, 8x/3 + 40 = 4x

So, 8x + 120 = 12x

Or, 4x = 120

So, x = 30

Thus, total no of students in the school will be (A) 240
