Can someone please explain why this is not 5+3+1=9 choose (9C3)? Where does it say that all colours have to be included? I couldn't understand the Magoosh explanation as well as the explanations above.

Thank you

Direct counting seems to be quick and easy way.
Red can be choose from 0 to 3, Blue can be choose from 0 to 3, and green can be choose from 0 to 1

then list them all out
Red Blue Green
0 3 0
0 2 1
1 2 0
1 1 1
2 1 0
2 0 1
3 0 0
So there are 7 in total

The only combinations possible are
RRR
BBB
RBG
RRB
RRG
BBR
BBG

Sometimes, it is better to go without formulas.
