Thanks Bunuel, a very interesting quesiton. I immediately disregarded option A because I thought the opposite of what you had in the begining of your rationale: what if the meteorologist calls rain on every day of the year except for one, which is consistent with what option A says, and the area also happens to rain quite often - say 364 out of 365 days, then this meteorologist's forecast is frequent and mostly correct, by coincidence. On the other hand, when this meteorologist calls for no rain and most competitors forecast rain, but it actually rained, this meteorologist's claim for being more reliable is weakend. That is, forecasting rain more frequently does not necessarily mean greater accuracy - it could indicate a tendency to over-predict rain.

By contract, option E feels a stronger strengthener, because it suggests that the competing stations had similar forecasts, and are comparably accurate when forecasting no rain, but were less accurate when predicting rain - strengthening the meteorologist's claim.

What flaws can you spot in my thinking please? Thank you.

TV meteorologist: Our station’s weather forecasts are more useful and reliable than those of the most popular news station in the area. After all, the most important question for viewers in this area is whether it will rain, and on most of the occasions when we have forecast rain for the next day, we have been right. The same cannot be said for either of our competitors.

Which one of the following, if true, most strengthens the meteorologist’s argument?

The meteorologist argues that the station’s forecasts are better because rain forecasts matter most, and this station is usually right when it predicts rain. The best strengthener should make that rain-forecast advantage more meaningful, not just technically true.

(A) The meteorologist’s station forecast rain more often than did the most popular news station in the area.

Correct. If this station predicted rain more often and was right on most of those occasions, while the most popular station was not right on most of its rain predictions, then this station’s rain forecasts look clearly more useful and reliable.

(B) The less popular of the competing stations does not employ any full-time meteorologists.

Wrong. This concerns the less popular competitor, not the most popular station in the conclusion.

(C) The most popular news station in the area is popular because of its investigative news reports.

Wrong. This explains popularity, but it does not show whose weather forecasts are more reliable.

(D) The meteorologist’s station has a policy of not making weather forecasts more than three days in advance.

Wrong. The argument is specifically about next-day rain forecasts, so this does not add useful support.

(E) On most of the occasions when the meteorologist’s station forecast that it would not rain, at least one of its competitors also forecast that it would not rain.

Wrong. This does not show that this station’s no-rain forecasts were correct, and it does not strengthen the claim about superior rain forecasting.
