Congratulations on the awesome score, flapjack29!

It might be worthwhile to have a chat with a good admissions consultant about your situation, but I think the safest thing to do would be to retake the exam. If I were looking at your score without any context, I would think that you cheated the system a bit, and exerted no effort on IR and AWA. MBA programs don't seem to mind mediocre scores on those two sections, but there's something off-putting about supremely low ones.

The nice thing is that you don't need to get some crazy composite score on your next attempt. You'll still have the 730, and that still matters WAY more than IR and AWA. But at least you'd be sending the message that you're willing to try the test again, and that you're willing to put effort into ALL of it, not just the sections that "matter."

You could also try explaining what happened in an optional essay, but that might feel awkward. Again, maybe a good admissions consultant can guide you a bit with that if you need it.

But to be clear: these aren't terrible problems! You have a 730. Life is good. A retake would be annoying, but... you have a 730! ;)

Congrats again!

Very nice progression and huge congratulations on your score, especially on verbal!

As the others have already alluded to, the AWA isn't necessarily a problem. It will likely depend on the school, but in the end it's quant and verbal that actually matter.

Hi flapjack29,

It's been about a month since your original post. Did you decide to retake your GMAT or stand pat with your current score?

Hi Scott,

Thanks for checking in. I retook. Couldn't match the 730 and came in at a 710. My IR and AWA improved significantly. Sadly, had to cancel. In a really confusing spot. I am hoping these schools will be able to look past this and see that I have a high GPA and an IR and AWA score from a previous test that is up to par.

What do you think?

Sincerely,
Frank

I think you should be fine. If you want some further clarity you could always reach out to the folks in admissions at your desired schools to see what they have to say.

Ajolson - your verbal score is excellent and Q47 should be enough for most schools, including the likes of Columbia and Booth. You should be fine from the standpoint of admissions. The only reason to retake would be to get a good scholarship.

Thank you egmat!

You think this is the case, even with my low IR and AWA for my 730 score (I have a 6 IR and 4 AWA on a previous 650 test).

Ajolson - Schools look for the AWA since it reflects your writing style. I would reinstate that 710 for two reasons:

1. It showed that you tried to improve. B-schools like a candidate who is looking to improve.
2. You get that improved AWA schools.

Schools will anyhow consider your highest GMAT score. However, with the 710-attempt they will have access to your AWA.
