• Quantifiers: THE number vs A numberA quick way through this question is to remember the rule:
→ The number = singular
→ A number = plural
Correct:
The number of students is very high. Correct:
A number of books are on the table.Solving from there
Notice that the subject is a long way from its verb in the problem we are considering.
This setup is another distraction called "long distance between subject and verb."
Let’s cut through the intervening words to make the answer clear.
A) The number ... is increasing.
→ Correct.
B) The numbers ... has been increasing.
→ Incorrect because of lack of agreement between
numbers and
has.
C) The number . . . are increasing.
→ Incorrect because singular
the number does not agree with the plural verb
are.
D) The number . . . has increasing.
→ In this context (and most contexts),
has increasing is babble. Native speakers should be wincing.
E) A number . . . is.
→ Incorrect because of the lack of agreement between
a number (plural) and
is (singular).
• Other things to note about this question
The subject is
the number of individuals. The test makers are trying to get us to think of the subject as plural, because of the presence of the word
individuals.
However, the subject is singular.
Remember that
a number of is plural and that
the number of is singular.
The distinction occurs quite frequently on the GMAT.
COMMENTSShikhaTomar and
samrat123456 , welcome to SC Butler.
samrat123456 , thank you for responding to a fellow aspirant.
Although this idiomatic split is slightly strange and a bit difficult, all of your posters knew exactly what was being tested.
I don't like telling people to memorize 10,000 words. Don't do that.
On the other hand, I don't believe that any aspirant, native speaker or not, should ignore idioms.
Memorize quite a few of the most frequently occurring idioms, a number commensurate with whatever score you want.
If trends hold, about 95 percent of SC questions that partly turn on idioms will present options that include idioms and a second or third type of error.
In other words, not memorizing idioms is not fatal.
(I'm not the sort to settle for "not fatal." I want you to do as well as you possibly can.)
Although memorizing idioms is not easy, if you do master a few dozen, say, you will be able to race through the question and eliminate answers that are not idiomatic.
Memorizing idioms is just another small weapon in your arsenal.
These answers range from very good to outstanding.
