Hi Nn88,

Your reply really gave me some pointers as I'm also considering applying to Haas. How is the program going for you so far? I assume you are still in the program. Did you have to move to the Bay Area to take advantage of the evening elective courses and opportunities?

I currently work in tech in the Midwest, low cost of living area. Do you think moving to the the Bay Area is worth it? I have a family and a job, although I am seriously considering changing jobs. So if I get a job with better pay in the Bay Area that might just make me relocate.

Do you think the program, in general, is worth it for a 40yr old? I am considering it for the network, opportunities in the Bay Area, proximity to VC funding etc. Future plans/goals: 1. a startup idea, 2.launching a coding bootcamp, 3. nonprofit/social entrepreneurship. But before then, would also love to have the big tech experience in Silicon Valley, I figured this might broaden my network ahead of my startup goal.

What are your thoughts?

Also, how easy is it to get scholarships like latticedefect mentioned above? Are there certain requirements to be met?

Thanks

A FEMBA as in fully employed or flexible executive? If it’s fully employed, it is going to put you in the class with a bunch of 28-year-olds. There’s definitely diversity in the fully employed program but 40 is definitely not the average class age.

I’m not saying this just because of the looks but in big part of the networking. It’s gonna be hard for you to work with people who only have 3 to 5 years of work experience and who are in junior roles.

If you’re going to pay full price, executive MBA may be a better way to go but I would consider whether you’re needing an MBA in general… You’re going to be in school for 2 to 3 years and that means you have about 20 to 25 years to recoup your investment. I’m sure it’s doable in just a handful of years but depending on your plans it may take a lot longer…

Any NBA is a great experience. I would definitely continue doing what you’re doing, talking to current students from your target programs to see if your goals are a good fit for the program. 👍
