You are raising -2 to an even power. Therefore you answer will always be a positive number.

\(-2^4\) + 2 = 16 + 2 = 18

That would be true if we were evaluating

\(\\
(-2)^4 + 2\\
\)

But if there are no brackets around the "-2", then because we evaluate exponents before multiplication, and because a negative sign really means you're multiplying by -1, we need to evaluate \(2^4\) first, to get 16, then multiply that by -1 to get -16, and lastly add 2 we get -14.

Given that x = 4 and we need to find the value of \(−2^{2 \sqrt{x}} + 2\)

\(−2^{2 \sqrt{x}} + 2\) = \(−2^{2 \sqrt{4}} + 2\)
= \(−2^{2*2} + 2\)
= \(−2^4 + 2\)
= \(−(2^4) + 2\)
= -16 + 2 = -14

So, Answer will be A
