A group of seven students is to be seated in a row of seven desks. In how many different ways can the group be seated if two of the preselected students must sit in an end seat (i.e., two students have been preselected to sit in either the first or the seventh seat)?

(A) 49
(B) 100
(C) 120
(D) 240
(E) 720

Hello!

Could somebody please explain to me why we multiply 120 x 2? I chose C.

Thank you in advance.

Students:
A, B, C, D, E, F, G

Say A and B must occupy the first or the seventh seat:

We can arrange them as follows:
A - - - - - B
B - - - - - A

For each scenario, the number of arrangements for the remaining five students (C, D, E, F, G) in the middle seats is 5!. Therefore, the total number of arrangements is 5! * 2 = 240.

Answer: D.
