A furniture dealer bought a sofa at the manufacturer's price and sold it at a 20 percent discount off its regular retail price of $440. If the dealer made a 10 percent profit on the manufacturer's price of the sofa, what was the manufacturer's price?

A. $308
B. $320
C. $352
D. $387
E. $396

Source: Skills Insight

Let manufacturer's price be x
440 * 0.8 = x * 1.1
x = 320

I can't seem to understand how you got 320. Your calculations appear to be giving 387.2 = 1.1 * 352= 440 * 0.8. What am I missing?

Hello.

I am also having issues with the problem. Please see my logic below.

440 * .8 = 356

356 is the sell price

X is the manufacturer price

356 - x = .1(x)

Where did I go wrong?

Thanks.

440*0.8=352
352*0/1=35.2 that's the profit
352-35.2=316.8 is the manufacturer's price. nearby 320

Hope it helps
