760 (Q48 V47) Awa 5.0
My test day experience was similar to that of everyone else. Not much new to add.
I have realised that there are two ways to prepare for the Gmat, the short way and the correct way.
The correct way would be the way to go if you have the time and the desire to fully understand concepts that are currently alien to you.
Alternatively, if you are short of time but are still focused on obtaining the best score possible
, you might want to peruse my comments and decide if they can help you prepare. .
Caveat: By best score, I mean the best score relative to what you would otherwise get (with limited preparation), not the highest relative to most other applicants.
Material - stop watch, OG , Forum, Gmatprep and notes of any 2-3 high performers
If used fully, they are sufficient. The notes of a few high performers are most likely to cover all the topics. I mention a few high performers and not just one because what is a simple concept for one person (and hence not covered in her notes) will probably be covered in another's notes.
First go through the notes of 2-3 high performers. Everything won't make sense at this point, but still read through them.
Start seeing questions by doing the OG diagnostic.
Structure your study sessions to as closely resemble the actual test as possible.
For example, do Q questions in blocks of 37 (appx 20 ps , 17 ds) , V in blocks of 41 ( appx 15 sc, 14 rc, 12 cr). If you can spare 3 hours at a stretch, do both Q and V .
Forum -
Use a browser that allows tabbed browsing to peruse the forum. Pick topics that are atleast 4-5 days old, have a question and have appx 8 plus posts ( one of them will pbbly be from the post author verifying the correct answer). open up such topics in new window tabs. Always do these questions in blocks and under timed conditions that resemble the actual test as closely as possible.
Go through all gmatprep questions in the forum. You could easily get questions wrong , especially in Q, if you are not familiar with such questions and are working under time pressure.
In Q, I definitely got problems wrong where units had to be converted ( area in sq footage into area in miles, etc) or number properties had to be checked ( x=0 for a non negative number, etc. ).
Here is how i approached different questions
Q Question analysis
absorb what is being asked for (watch words carefully - integer, fraction, number, final stem that asks for desired variable)
see how given equation can be manipulated to simplify calculation
formulate reqd equation if not provided
if eqn formulation does nto proceed smoothly, plug in values
if values dont work, make educated guess by using poe to negate obvious wrong answers
if that also doesnt work, guess blindly and MOVE on the question could be experimental and no question should result in losing poise and going awry on time allocation targets
V
SC Question analysis
read all the asnwer choices completely in conjuntion with the non underlined portions before and after the underlined portion to verify that you are not missing something
figure out the differences between the answer choices
atleast one portion will be common to more than one choice, use that narrow down options if you can't pick the correct answer , then use further poe
see if you can recognise the structure when it is a tedious and long idiom for eg so much X that Y, it would helpt o segretae the x and y so as to focus on the crucial parts
rc Question analysis
understand and absorb the passage in first read, don't back up to clarify facts, only back up if meaning of sentence or passage is not clear , revert to passage while answering question if in any doubt on feel questions or on factoids
cr Question analysis
if you can't pick an answer, then use poe, in poe process, don't consider extraneous variables or logic that is not discussed in the para
