IntroductionAs an aspiring business leader, I embarked on a challenging yet transformative journey to pursue an MBA degree.
My background - Indian, 29yo, Chartered Accountant, GMAT 720, Work ex - I've experience across all Big Four firms as an auditor, Currently based in London. Through introspection, strategic planning, and leveraging my experiences in London, I ultimately secured admission to IESE, HEC, and INSEAD. This is the story of my reapplicant journey, highlighting the key changes I made to my profile and the lessons learned along the way.
BackgroundIn R1 and R2 deadlines for Fall 2023 sessions, I had applied to 8 schools - Ross, Tuck, Fuqua, Cornell, IESE, INSEAD, LBS, and HEC Paris. To my surprise, I was rejected by all without even an interview invite from any school. While I did understand that I come from an over-represented pool, I did have spikes in my profile - Big brands on CV, Non-engineer, decent extra-curriculars, and a background in cricket across various levels.
Embracing Reflection and GrowthFollowing the disappointment of receiving rejections from the eight schools I applied to in the first application cycle, I chose to view the setback as a chance for self-improvement. While I did not receive feedback from the schools, I dedicated substantial time to analyze each application critically.
A Refined Reapplication StrategyTo formulate a comprehensive reapplication strategy, I categorized my analysis into controllable and non-controllable factors. Focusing on the controllable elements, I ensured that any changes I made to my profile were meaningful and aligned with my long-term goals. Collaborating with a renowned MBA consulting company in India, I reviewed my essays holistically, identifying key shortcomings such as misalignment between short-term and long-term goals and a lack of logical flow. By addressing these issues and providing more insightful anecdotes, I crafted more compelling essays.
The Impact of LocationRecognizing the significance of an international perspective, I realized that studying and working in the United States did not align with my long-term aspirations. Consequently, I pursued job opportunities in the UK and Europe, envisioning my life after completing my MBA. In July 2022, I secured a position with a Big Four firm in London. Living in this multi-cultural city profoundly influenced my perspective and reinforced the importance of international experience for European business schools.
NetworkingUnderstanding the value of a strong support network, I actively sought opportunities to connect with professionals, alumni, and students from the schools I aspired to join. I attended networking events, participated in virtual campus tours, and engaged in online events to expand my connections and gain insights into the MBA experience. This networking effort proved invaluable in refining my understanding of each school's culture and values.
Triumph Through ReapplicationArmed with a fresh perspective and a refined application, I applied to IESE, LBS, HEC, and INSEAD. While I did not receive an interview invitation from LBS, I successfully secured interviews at the other three schools and ultimately received admission offers. This outcome validated the effectiveness of my reapplication strategy and highlighted the importance of clarity and effective communication in portraying one's story to the admissions committees.
ConclusionAs I embark on my MBA journey, I eagerly anticipate the opportunities and challenges ahead, knowing that my reapplicant story has shaped me into a more determined and adaptable business leader.
Lastly, I know that the whole process of GMAT Prep and application essays is emotionally draining, and can be very lonely, so I'll be happy to chat!!
In case someone needs a different perspective on GMAT Prep, I had written the below article a couple of years back (hope it helps)
