I am a director in legal (derivatives) at a French IB in London. I have been admitted at Booth London with a 25k scholarship. My employer is very favourable to the MBA but cannot fund it (at least this year). I can finance it but am wondering if Booth London is the best programme and if this is a good investment for my career. My purpose is to transition out of a specialist role and pursue a career on the FO side either on the sell side or buy side.
I have seen alternatives (Wharton Global, LBS Columbia) but not sure I would get a scholarship. At the moment, I am thinking that the best course of action may be a frank conversation with HR asking for the change it would make internally if I go for the MBA and the kind of roles that they would offer.
Any suggestions?

Congratulations on your admission to Booth London! It is a great program, and the 25k scholarship is a significant award.
As for whether it is the best program for you, that depends on your specific goals and needs. If you are looking to transition out of a specialist role and pursue a career on the FO side, then Booth London is a good option. The program has a strong focus on finance, and the alumni network is well-connected in the London financial markets.
However, there are other good programs out there as well. Wharton Global, LBS, and Columbia are all excellent schools, and they may be a better fit for your specific goals. If you are not sure which program is right for you, I recommend that you speak to current students and alumni from each school.
As for your employer, it is definitely worth having a frank conversation with HR. Explain your goals and why you believe an MBA is the best way to achieve them. Ask them what kind of roles they would be able to offer you after you graduate. If they are supportive of your MBA plans, they may be willing to offer you some financial assistance.
Ultimately, the decision of whether or not to pursue an MBA is a personal one. You need to weigh the costs and benefits carefully, and make sure that it is the right decision for your career.

I would definitely say that you want to chat with the HR with understand what an MBA would give you in your firm.
"Favorable view" is not favorable if they are not offering some kind of a path or offering help offset the cost of the tuition but rather neutral and frankly, I don't know any employer who would have a negative view of their employee improving their skill set and being better.... though I understand the whole HR budget stupidity in organizations. There are rules and there are budgets that are set years in advance and if someone were to get a bigger bonus or comp, then someone has to get less... At the same time they could do tuition reimbursement in 1-2 years when the budget catches up or offer a pay bump or promotion.
About Booth London, Booth is a very strong program but not sure about the Alum base and the cohort. Program size is important and helpful.
P.S. Scholarships in EMBA are very rare by the way, so congrats on getting it. $25 is not huge however since the program cost will be likely $200+ at the end of the whole thing, so don't go crazy about the scholarship, yet at the same time it is quite rare, so you should be feeling totally good about it!
