Which of the following is equal to \(\frac{1}{6}(48)^7\)?

Glancing at the answer choices, we see that they are all in terms of 8, 6, and 48, which is equal to 8 x 6.

So, to more easily see which choice is is equal to \(\frac{1}{6}(48)^7\), we can express the expression in the question stem in terms of 8 and 6.

\(\frac{1}{6}(48)^7\) = \(\frac{48^7}{6}\) = \(\frac{(8 x 6)^7}{6}\) = \(8(8 x 6)^6\)

Let's now go to the answer choices.

A. 8^6

This choice captures only part the expression and is clearly much less than the expression.

B. 8^7

This choice captures only part the expression and is clearly much less than the expression.

C. 6(48)^6

This choice is a trap that's similar to what we found but has a 6 outside the parentheses rather than an 8.

D. 8(48)^6

Since 48 = 8 x 6, this choice is equal to what we found.

E. 8(48)^7

This choice is a trap that's similar to what we found but raises the number in the parentheses to the 7th power rather than to the 6th power.

The correct answer is

Which of the following is equal to \(\frac{1}{6}(48)^7\)?

A. 8^6
B. 8^7
C. 6(48)^6
D. 8(48)^6
E. 8(48)^7

A) 8^6 vs. (48/6)(48)^6 = 8(48)^6 [The right side is clearly greater.]

B) 8^7 = 8(8^6) vs. 8(48)^6 [The right side is clearly greater.]

C) 6(48)^6 vs. 8(48)^6 [The right side is clearly greater.]

D) 8(48)^6 = 8(48)^6

Since we have the correct answer, there’s no need to check answer choice E.

Answer: D
