I imagine many people are grappling with this question...
As I mentioned in a previous post, I took about 2.5/3 months off from studying. I've already taken the classic GMAT twice (both over a year ago) that didn't go well, so I started slowly going through TTP. I'm about 55% finished with just the Quant course (I'm much better at Verbal) and planning to power through the next 3-4 months and take it late December/early January, knowing that I may still want to take it one more time after that.
I'm struggling to decide which version to take. My prior attempts went badly because of testing anxiety and nerves. I had two mocks over 700 going into my second attempt, so content wise I was pretty prepared -- I just need more practice and to really master the quant concepts. My goal score is 720+ and I'm targeting Sloan and SOM as my top choices, and won't be applying until R1 next year (2024 for a fall 2025 start).
I've started making a mental pro/con list for each test:
Classic pro:
- I already have many hours under my belt studying for this test and have the timing strategies down pat
- I'm very good at sentence correction -- it brings up my verbal score
- IR isn't factored into the overall score (I'm not the best at interpreting charts and graphs; the science section on the ACT was my hardest IYKYK)
Classic con:
- Will it even be available after early January??? We obviously don't know yet.
Focus pro:
- No geometry - a quant subject I'm very bad at (and one of the longest TTP chapters, which I haven't started yet)
- Shorter and fewer sections
- Ability to review 3 questions -- this may really lower my test anxiety
Focus con:
- I will need to really study IR now that it's its own real section
- I will need to learn how to take a different test timing/strategy wise
Clearly I'm conflicted. There's no obvious winner. Any thoughts or advice on how I should proceed? (If you don't have anything nice to say, please kindly scroll on.)
